Post FYI - Engine harness replacement

I just dropped my car off to have the engine wiring harness replaced. I talked to the mechanic for a while and he mentioned that Porsche only pays them labour based on replacing the harness w/o dropping the engine. He also mentioned that non-varioram cars don't need the engined dropped to replace the harness but they have found with the varioram cars it's just not possible w/o partially dropping the engine. I presume that it's too tight a fit. This might explain the varying experiences people have been mentioning in previous posts.

My dealer (Parktown Porsche Audi) has done at least 4 varioram 993 harness replacements (incl mine) w/o dropping the engine on any of them. It's not necessary - that's why PAG won't pay for an engine drop.

So engine drop is supposedly not necessary on varioram 993s....so I assume we're saying it is necessary on pre-varioram 993s?

Dropping the engine is definitely not necessary on pre-varioram 993's. And as per Dan's email apparently it's not necessary on varioram 993's either. My mechanic did mention though that it's a tighter fit on varioram cars which seems to be why they prefer to drop the engine on these cars when replacing the engine harness. But in any case Porsche does not reimburse the shop for the extra labour incurred from dropping the engine.

No. There's not been any suggestion of the need to drop the engine to replace the harness on a non-vario car. Why would you assume otherwise?

According to my dealer, & maybe they're atypically skilled, the harness replacement recall does NOT require an engine drop on ANY NA 993 (didn't ask about the TT). The mechanic did say it was a pita job.

I had tried to get them to drop my engine so I could parlay it into a cut rate clutch job, but no deal. All I got was a new harness.
