Default I didn't ask for a vanity plate but........

Here's a strange one. I went to a motor vehicles branch to renew my annual registration and because the plate I had last year was not in the greatest shape, I asked for a new one. It had the numbers "963" on it. I asked the lady if she would dig through the pile and give me a plate with 993. She did.

I didn't even notice that the plate said "BUG 993" until I got home. My Jaguar buddies liked poking fun at me this past summer saying "why would I want to drive a VW with a souped up motor? This should give them chuckle when they see it.

Reading some of the other threads, I am kind of stunned that it costs so much to register vehicles in certain parts of the USA. In Alberta it cost me the equiv. of $40 USD for one year, and I get a cool plate for nothing!

That's cool..my buddy got one of the 2 '98 Targas in Washington and egged me on to get my 993. When he regestered his he asked the dealer to ask the WA dmv to give him 993 xxx and he got it. So when I got my used '96 about 8 months later I asked the same thing. I also got the 993 number with what ever letters.

No "BUG" tho....that's too cool. I went with 627 xxx for the A6 2.7 and tried but didn't get 570 xxx for the Volvo v70. They gave me 075 xxx but it had to be in order...oh well, only enthousiests get it!

Sweet plate - most everyone on earth wouldn' t know what a 993 was, so it's truly an inside 911 owners joke!

Here's mine below... (BTW - a local guy who started up the push for Maryland PCA plates actually got "356" for his 356!

Teenagers sometimes walk up to me after I park and say... "Is that your car? Cool - "420" - code name for Marijuana". <DOH!> I must be getting old. Never heard of that numerical expression for pot before I got this plate.

Just as an aside, I was near my house getting gas last night, and some "young dudes" walked up to my car and said "You're in the wrong neighborhood, aren't you?" I live in a middle to lower income "area" though my street is nice! I just replied, "Well, I actually live right around the corner from here and that's how I can afford this car!" It's nice to be living in a reasonable neighborhood and not be house poor. If we moved to Potomac MD where we'd like to, we couldn't afford our cars!

Great story Steve! You know It can be a tough decision sometimes, but nothing can replace that feeling of driving the sports cars, and as they say -life is way to short to not enjoy more that just having a big house in a high end neibourhood! (no disrespect to the guys who can afford anything)
