Does anyone know WHY the windshield creaks?

I know the fixes and all that, but I was wondering if there ever was an official explanation? I can't believe the body would flex enough, given that the roof-line is identical to earlier cars and those are squeak free... Was the seal redesigned? too big or in the wrong material ? Just curious, as the opneings front and rear look just like my old 911 which did not have this issue !

There are several possible reasons. First of all the seal around the window isn't very tight so they tend to creak over time. They window is also glued, as this glue deteriorates with age, the screen could also creak. My OPC has a theory that grit gets in around the seal with can also cause creaking.
If you do a search you'll find several suggested solutions. No single solution seems to work for everyone, but the "rope" which is inserted behind the orignal seal appears to be the one that people have most success with.

IF the windshield is properly adhered---my theory is that the lip of the rubber seal 'chatters' against the body (windhield frame). During temperature extremes, mine was silent! I assume that when it was very cold (well below freezing) the seal was stiff enough that it would glide over the body surface when there was chasis flex. When it was very warm (high 80s F) i think that the seal is supple enough to flex with the windshield frame. The Pedro's Ice Wax lubricates the seal lip, so that it will glide over the body when there is chasis flex. Two treatments of Pedro's, and mine is silent five months later. that's my theory,YTMV your theory may vary

I used the foam rope/silicon spray that supposes to last longer than the wax. It helps but still makes some noise during the cold weather. Now with the pss9 installed, I won't bother trying to quiet it down anymore

I replaced the windshield...the windshield squeek went away. The windshield had been in the far since 1996. HOWEVER, I do have squeeking from the rear window.
Some say that the squeek(s) is a result of the chassis development that went into the 993 over the 964. All was strengthened except the roof, and one other area that I don't recall, the trunk lid?

the seals were changed from the 954 to the 993 to allow the windows of the 993 to sit more flush with the cars exterior. The inherent design of the seals was the culprit and not an increased amount of flex in the chassis

Greg, just go out and drive behind a gravel truck. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> A new windshield will do the trick. I had to replace mine due to a large crack, but prior to that I was using the Pedro's treatment. It worked for a little while.

Greg,
My windshield used to creak very badly and it was very aggrivating (for me).
I installed the rope w/ 3M silocone treatment and it went away - for me, it was about the best $20 I spend at the time because the sound completely went away.
I accidentally bought 2 kits and have one that is unopend - if you want it I'll ship it to you for $10.
PM me if you want it.

s2racer,
The Pedros goes under the black seal (trim) only. I suggest installing the foam rope for a (sort of) permanent solution. Buy Rick's kit or call one of the Rennlist vendors. This is a Porsche kit and there is a service bulletin as well that you can get from your dealer or I can send you a copy.
I did the SB a year ago and redo the Pedros or silicone spray every 6 mos or so. Made a big difference. Installing the rope is kind of a PITA, so I pulled the rubber trim off and did it. Much easier that way.

body side. I clean all the grit/dust from around the seal so i do not scratch the paint, then get a wooden chopstick or tongue depressor to slightly lift the lip of the seal. I insert the straw of the aerosol pedro's under the lip of the seal right behind the chopstick, and work my way around the windshield seal. max

I have done it outside only, glass side... I had not though of body side but that worked anyway. go figure ! I did the whole perimeter of the seal using a 0.05 feeler gauge blade to lift the seal and slide the wax around. PS: I have the wax bottles, not the spray, but it's just as easy to drip it on the windshield and it falls down under the seal - it's be better to have spray to do bodyside. The front is now so quiet I can hear the back !!! $@#$#@$
