I'm curious to know how many here can do this? Not me. I've been doing my own oil changes since 2001 and have always had to unbolt and pull that one oil line to provide room for the filter to come out ….just not enough room in my case. I wonder how this difference can exist from engine to engine; it seems to defy logic???

I have a 1996 Carbiolet and a 1997 C4S. I never needed to move the oil line. As mentioned before, I tab a hole into the filter to drain the oil to reduce the mess when taking it out. I use the craw-type filter wrench with a long extension which makes tight space operation easy.
OK, that's already three to my one; next time I'll try again. Admittedly, I unbolt the oil line because that's how I did it some 18 years ago, not having being able to get the filter through of course. But waaaay back then, being the 911 newb, maybe I'll try it again on my next change doing the hole/drain thing first, then see if I can wriggle that bad boy out.
One time unbolting the oil line, the last 5 or 6 able to juggle it out.
Juggling makes a mess, hence the big pan idea above.
Also great to just drop the filter in and not worry about where it lands.
I don't remove the pipe either, just rotate the filter down and then back over the sway bar and pull it out forwards by the tranny.
Definately non-intuitive but very possible.
i only put my filters on finger tight so never a problem removing and I've never had a leak (I do oil the rubber seal before installing.
Next time I think I might try a plastic bag around the small filter to contain all the oil. I like to open up my filters and see what's been caught so don't really want to puncture and contaminate
BTW the cardboard trick works a treat- this was my cleanest oil change yet!

Still going to make a mess but at least it is relatively easy to get the small filter off.
When you put it back on just remember it only needs to be hand tightened (plus a tiny bit if it makes you feel better).
