Looks like a $50 part on pelican and maybe not uncommon for a 24 yr old rubber boot

as long as I don’t have something more serious that caused it

Yep, very common problem. Just get a new one and replace it. Just recently replaced mine.

Happens to all 993s . Easy repair. There are two versions. Be sure to get the correct one based on your build date.

Plastic, not rubber! Duct tape it! Just kiddin' , buy a new one, fit it, and then show your woman the nice and shiny bit of new plastic that now graces your engine!

Wish I could replace my 24 yr old cracked parts so easily or at least get 24 yr younger parts

these cars really are a value

Since the failure blows out, look for any debris that may catch in the belts also, it is unlikely but when it is off, look for any debris that may have fallen in.
There are two styles of this part with two different part numbers, use care to order the correct one for your car.

By the way, this is not an engine out repair no matter how unwilling a shop is to do it with the engine in place!
Had to add that for good measure folks!:

Just be careful you dont drop the screws into the engine bay.....
