Default Porsche and our lives

Ever since I purchased my first Porsche, I've noticed
that it's helped improve business relations. Everyone
seems to want to " work with" someone they think will
bring them success. No one seems to doubt or question
your abilities.

...Not many cars can give you that kind of leverage!

In contract negotiations, I often hear suggestions that
a contract re-negotiation is in order resulting from their
perception that I'm earning too much. I always reply:
" Why yes, I've been wanting to do some upgrades to
my three P-cars and I'm also thinking of buying a TT..
..Your idea of helping me make more money is a good one...
What can we do to this contract to make this possible ?"
This makes them laugh, but it also puts them back
in their place.

...Not many cars can give you that kind of leverage!

Also, friends want to talk and visit more often. More people
want to be your friend -including other P-car owners.

..Not many cars can give you that kind of leverage!

People who once condescended to you, can't condescend
to you anymore. Condescending in-laws are speechless.
This makes dreaded in-law encounters more tolerable.

..Not many cars can give you that kind of leverage!

While driving, you're the one in command. Most people
respect you -often giving you the right of way and
giving thumbs-up. Driving is no longer perceived as
a dreaded time consuming task. Passing a belligerent
motorist is something you can do with great sonic beauty
and style.

..Not many cars can give you that kind of leverage!

Servicing and modifying is often exciting and intriguing;
it's not always perceived as a waste of time and money;
It's inspiring and often leads us to innovative ideas;
it often makes you think that this investment will continue
to improve your life and future.

..Not many cars can give you that kind of leverage!

I could keep going on with positive examples....

I'm not sure whether to agree with you on this or not..

I guess I will agree with some of your statements but since I live in Sweden where everyone is jelous at eachother and since I'm only 23 years old and drive a 993 I'm not so sure about people giving me the thumbs up in traffic. One thing is fore sure, people get out of your way quite more often then they have to and I find this very amusing..

People don't like me in a 993 - they think Porsche owners think they are better than everyone else (not true... but we are quicker A to B!) so I get a lot of hassle on the motorways.

If it's not a 800cc Fiesta trying to prove to me it can do 100mph it's a 7-series BMW trying to prove it can get within 2 inches of my rear bumper without hitting it.

I just let em all pass... but it certainly doesn't give me any leverage!

I think you'll find that UK is very "anti-speed" and "anti-rich". You're not meant to "show off" your wealth. Instead of admiring and aspiring to Porsche drivers they try to make it as hard for you as possible, sometimes even result in car being damaged. They think "if you can afford to buy expensive cars you can afford to fix it"! Sick I know but it happens here.
It doesn't stop me enjoying it though!

I think there are three kinds of people in the world. Those that have one, those that want one, and those who don't realize they want one.

Those that want can be broken done further into those that hate you and those that admire the car. Thaose that don't realize, couldn't care less about any other car on the road.

I hope business associates want to work with me because I'm good at what I do and they enjoy working with me. I also hope my friends visit me because they like spending time with me and not simply to be around a p-car.

That having been said, I think if it helps your personal confidence to drive a p-car then the change in your perception of how others percieve you may be what's happening here.

Just my $.02

I'm with Tech-Law,

I've bought Porsches because I'm obsessed with the bloody things. Almost everyone else I know thinks our cars are simply conspicuous tokens of wealth.

It seems the people in my life like me, despite the car I drive.

I work in Denmark where there is more than 200% tax on cars..

I own three Porsches (registered in Sweden) and I believe that some of my colleagues think that I'm some sort of alien..

I would have to agree. Most new friends I meet up somewhere always see me in the beater first (excluding p-car events of course. LOL). I hate being introduced and having someone mention what I drive.

I've had a wide variety of reactions from other motorists from smiles to glares.

I think my friends (after all, I'm only concerned with their opinion) would have reacted with jealousy when we were younger.

However, since splashing out on my 993 in December, my friends have all reacted with a combination of understanding, admiration and congratulations.

Oh - and jealousy too.

I just talked to someone close to me who has the means to buy a nice 993. He has always wanted a Porsche. When I was younger and pointed out the hottest newest car he would say "Why wouldn't you just get a used Porsche". Well I've had 3 911's now and he has had none. Recently he was looking for a 2nd car to drive on nice days and I said "why dont you get a 993" and he said "I don't know if I like the image associated with a Porsche. Nothing against you and your car, it's totally self imposed". I thought to myself that he is missing the boat of life if he really wants something but is so conscious of what other people think of him that he chooses not to get a 993. Imo it has alot to do with his social life at church. He bought a $5K jeep. I enjoy my car and have no guilt whatsoever about it.

I go through much of the same thing that everyone else does. In my situation, the people that truly know me realize that I am a car guy and a total Porsche fanatic. For the people that don't know me I try to explain that cars are my hobby and that I spend some cash on my cars, but I am frugal with so many others things in my life. For people that don't get it and want to make an issue, I tell them that I don't buy things to impress people and don't avoid buying things because I am worried about what people will think or if they will be jealous. Of course, I ultimately came to the conclusion that our society is built on the premise that we should all strive to be successful, but no one really wants anyone to be successful and many people resent the people that are.
