Question 2019 - What are people using for Smart Phone Navigation Mounts?

Recently discussing all the options of a smart phone mount with another 993 owner. There seems to be a majority of options that require one to look down while driving.
The reason why I created this thread was because every thread on this subject had some options... they are either dated (blaupunkt navi / tom tom iphone 3 adapter/ rennline clock mount / proclip options) or AGAIN involve looking down while driving.

The concern made by a more senior 993 driver is that looking down while driving is dangerous.

So here's my question(s) to the forum:

- what are your thoughts on this "looking down" issue
- what mount do you use?
- do you have suggestions on a top of dash / windscreen mount that would not damage the dashboard.

Again since I have very little seat time I am envisioning something that allows me to survey my surroundings and check my smart phone based navigation if needed.

Thanks for your time & suggestions.

-Paul

Rennline phone mount is clean-looking and in an excellent spot.

Thanks for the reassuring vote on this option.
Mark, any chance that you might have a pic of your dash and your phone mounted ?

I have one of these custom 993 mounts 3D printed for our cars.

I have the ashtray version and I love it:

I think the Rennline one is the best that I've seen. Simple & no mess install & it keeps the phone at the same height as the gauges.

I am definitely getting the Rennline mount. I have been happy with all their other parts and accessories. Those suction cup mounts are built like crap, and they fall apart quickly.

I have a magnetic phone mount with short neck and suction cup to the windshield. Works pretty well for me.

Looks like Gavonder beat me to it. I also have a similar Rennline mount in the Macan, but it's installed (by design) a good bit lower. Doesn't really matter since I have CarPlay in it.

I am a huge rennline fan too. My dad put the rennline mounts in several of his cars; however, it requires you put a magnetic sticker on the back of your phone. For iPhone XS users, that means no more wireless charging which is a nonstarter for me. If someone has found a way around that, I would buy their mount in a second.

For years I've used a RAM mount - the suction cup fits the clock lens perfectly. I paired that with a short RAM aluminum arm & RAM cradle for whatever iPhone version I happened to have at the time. Works great and removes instantly.

That said, I recently took a look at Mark's Rennline mount and like it. Hmm.

Another vote for Rennline. I also have RAM mounts which are fine if you buy the proper mount for your cell phone. The RAM universal (x-mount thing) is annoying. I like that the Rennline is not on the windshield. The magnet is super strong and holds the phone securely. It was a PITA to get in to my car as the clock was in there very, very tight. I worked it for 30 minutes with trim tools and persistence paid off - the video on the Rennline site of the install is so optimistic!

Also using the Rennline. Really decent mount. You don't notice the looking down thing as it is in line with the instruments which you're looking at anyway.
