Default Strange Noise after LFW conversion / clutch service

Hi guys,

I took the engine and gearbox out of my 993 in order to convert to LWF (of course with new clutch, release bearing, etc.).

Now, after assembling, there is a very annoying noise when the clutch is pressed (see video). I then removed the engine, took of the transmission and checked the release fork and shaft. The needle bearings and bushings are all perfect.

I have no idea where the noise is coming from. I am grateful for every idea.

thanks!

Maybe the clutch slave cylinder?

Well it was okay before but maybe I have somehow damaged it during install. Any ideas on how to test it?

I'm sure someone has a better idea than mine, which was winging it and buying a new one. I had an annoying grawk/click/notch that was hard to isolate. Spent $80 on a new slave and it's been good for the past couple hundred miles.

I just ordered one because I'm running out of ideas. The current one is no older than 2 years so I doubt that's the solution...

Sounds like an unlubricated shaft/plunger in whatever it rides in, pilot bearing/slave housing. By removing the slave you will probably figure out what kills this dog as it sounds like it is really suffering!

Not sure what you mean. I believe the only thing thats needs lubrication are the roller bearings on the release shaft (plus a little bit on the main shaft splines as corrosion protection). Pilot bearing and release bearing are sealed.

I tried to isolate the problem by playing around with the slave cylinder off the gearbox. Turns out this was not the best idae since the clutch pedal fell to the floor almost immediately. Pretty sure I will have some fun bleeding the system when the new slave arrives

Got a tip on a German Forum which put me on the right path. The sound came from the friction between relase bearing and the guide tube. A test fit without the guide tube eliminated the noise completely.

Now I put everything back together as is and am hoping the relasie bearing will center itself once the engine is running.

Digging this one up from a couple years back but I have the exact same noise after doing a LWF conversion. I was methodical durng install.

Did you resolve this issue? If so, what was done differently?

I would use Olista 3EP on the guide tube.

See thread here for lubricant suggestions from JasonAndreas:

Yes, used olista 3EP on the guide tube. Was pretty obsessive with lubrication/torque values/etc in hopes to do it once. Hoping I don't have the drop the engine and it centers itself as OP suggested it might.

Hi Adam,

I just stressed too much. The noise went away completely after the first start.

Good Luck with you install!

Did you or did you not lube the exterior of the guide tube?

Yes I used a light coat of olista on the guide tube.

The LWF setup needs the lube, whereas the dual mass flywheel release bearing has a plastic sleeve and states not to lube.
