Food for thought??? 2020 992 ... what's next?
So... I was at the auto show with the wife. I explained it's a 2020 992. She asked if the next model would be a new version based on the 993 . ??
I thought it was interesting.... bc the next version has to jump a number. They did bring back the 718#.

I saw a last generation GT2RS last night in town and it was a beautiful car but kinda big compared to our cars......

I always thought that the sequence followed a branch of development, like a spur..? E.g. 930 spawned the 934 etc.
So for the next Gen, which will surely be Electric etc., the'd have to start from a Typ that involved some kinda Electro Wizardry..?
Alternatively, perhaps they'll reset the Clock, and go with a prefix..? 911 Typ E901..? Nice homage..

The last two times I bought (leased) my daily drivers I actually drove the 991. It is a beautiful car. Smooth, nimble, very fast. I didn't find it to be all that special. The BMW M3 competition package is also a really nice car. More practical, sharp and VERY fast. Both times I went with the M3.... at half the lease price and twice the utility.
My (new to me) 993 is special. It speaks to me in a way a new modern Porsche never could. I can honestly say I plan on keeping it forever. I have some things I want to do to it, mainly bringing it back to as close to perfect as I can. I sit in it and love the dash and gauges. They are special. Like a Rolex watch. Well made. I love the thunk of the door. No other car sounds like it. I love the way the steering wheel tugs at my hands as I drive it down the road. The new Porsche doesn't feel anything like it. I love how beautifully it shifts. The new Porsche left a lot to be desired in the manual tranny dept. I love the way it sounds, especially at 6000 rpm. It sounds real. I'm not at all a fan of the way BMW pumps artificial? motor noises through my stereo speakers. Seriously, why do that??t.... because the sound of my M going through a tunnel with the windows down is fabulous.
My M3 is a great daily, and I totally like it in the 4 door over the 2 door M4. But my new 993 is authentic and pure, for real, in a way that no modern Porsche car can be these days.
It is SO special, I don't see how Porsche could ever call any other 911 'number next' a NINE NINE THREE again.

So much for my thinking that it was a Development Cycle that determined the Type suffix, I read yesterday that the 993 was called so because it was chalked up for release in 1993 [when it was on the Drawing Board in 1988]..

I reckon next gen will be 994 (though just speculation at this point), still follows some of the 'consistency' over the last several generations (99x), and also an upward numbering in line with last 2 gens (991 and 992)
Maybe I've got my ****-eyed optimist glasses on, but the front of the 992 picks up some stylistic cues from the 993 (body lines of hood/bumper/fenders especially)

Call it whatever they will, each newer generation looks progressively different- wider, longer, heavier, bulbous- than the iconic substance and style which define ours and earlier ilk..
