Default C4 ABS Booster Pump - Unobtainable Rebuild?

964 and 993 C4 ABS Brake Booster Pump
Part number 993 355 953 01 or 964 355 953 01 or 964 355 901 01 or

Unattainable new or used. Replacement from German here soon for $3,000 – $4,000

Need to rebuild mine. Do you have any advice, experience?

I found a thread from 2006 "Replacement ABS brake pumps - Invasion Auto Products?" and am considering them because they are local.

(Posting this on 993 and 964 forums)

... and now you know why it's important to bleed your ABS/ABD brake system pump when you bleed your brakes and clutch slave cylinder.

A while back I offered the service of ABS/ABD system bleed for ($40) to local socal rennlisters, in an effort to help offset the exorbitant cost of the PIWIS I had purchased.

While a few gentlemen took me up on my offer and were very considerate about my time as well as theirs, others were not so considerate...You know who you are.

I think I'll raise my price to $50...those who had scheduled and then no showed, $125.

Thanks Chuck,
Yes saw that and ordered it.. Got message back that an update is underway and backordered. The price will double. I cancelled my order. Here is the email:Parts Manager

This part number has been superseded to 993-355-953-02 with a new cost of $2,965.27. The ABS pump is currently on back order from Porsche awaiting release and another potential part number supersession.

Please let me know if you would like me to update it to the new part number.

Best

Rene

No explanation. It is really a very simple pump with a motor and pressure switch.
I have searched every Porsche Junk yard in the country I can find (about 12) and NO ONE has one.
I am force to rebuild or have it rebuilt. Got a tip for a local (LACA) firm that rebuilds them called Invasion in North Hollywood. Will look into having them try to fix it.

I went through this when getting a new steering gear. The price has risen quite a bit on these over the past 5 years. I'm assuming a number of 993 specific parts will be like this.

May have to do with that very few if any OEs use hydraulic assist any more and the universe of parts supply and vendors offering this may be collapsing precipitously, ZF may be completely out of this business by now.

Hey Joel... this sucks. Please keep us posted. No doubt what you find will help others in the future.

Joe,
If it is a simple a component as you state, why not give it a shot at rebuilding it yourself?

It sounds like a great DIY write-up in the making while adding some greatly needed tech content to an otherwise dying forum.

Rebuilders can clean out for minimal cost.

Minimal cost sounds like how much, exactly? And do you have to remove and install the pump from your car? If time=money, Im wondering what minimal actually is starting to look like?

Yes, you must remove the pump from your car and ship it to the factory that rebuilds and cleans out ABS pumps. BBA reman in MA has done them and many others. There are no parts that generally wear out. The pumps just need to be cleaned out as crud builds up on the seals and interferes with pressure sealing. Remove the pump (messy job), ship it, re-install and bleed the system well. Certainly minimal compared to a $1,800 plus pump.

SKM, thanks so much for the heads up...any info on the rebuild shop name or contact info, for the benefit of those in need?

In my experience as a machinist and mechanic of valves and pumps at the Navy shipyard many moons ago, most pumps do contain seals which are wear items and even the metal part wear; bushings, bearings n such and critical clearances that are pump performace dependent...

An ABS rebuild kit would be awesome but I wouldnt look to the shop that performs the rebuilds to provide such a kit.
