Post 993 vavle train noise

I've been looking at 993 for a while, found a nice 97. But i am concerned by the amount of valve train noise, It sounds like mechanical lifters that may neeed a bit of adjusment. How serious and how expensive might this be.

kahuna,

The 1997 993 has hydraulic lifters that do not require adjustment. A certain amount of valve train noise is normal (and desirable from a cahracter standpoint). Is the engine sound tray on or off? If it is off, noise is louder.

Do you have a real name?

Kahuna,

As Mike said, some noise is normal. Get someone who knows 993s to hear it...may be fine. If you need to replace any of the lifters (not uncommon), it's an easy DIY, if you are so inclined (lots in the archives on this). Hope this helps.

Be sure to get a PPI, and mention this to the mechanic.

This can also be a sign of the carbon build-up problem.

Kahuna:

After I took the engine sound tray off, I have seen significantly increased valve noise, especially when starting up in the garage and there is nothing wrong with my valve guides. Just a FYI. Good luck!

Thanks Guys! It was just a little noisier than i expected, and seemed to get louder as the engine heated up.

I would get the dealer to run a compression leak down test if I were you. This is a big $$$ job if it is valve guides. Believe me I know...

Collapsed valve lifter or lifters could be the cause of your noise.

My 97 has now been in twice for lifter replacement on the driver side already this year.
First time all 6 were replaced, then after ~1000km the "ticking" was back. Again, 2 lifters, same side have been replaced this time under full warrantee. My car has just 30k miles on the odometer.....and has been dealer serviced since new.
