Default odometer not working

I've searched the boards, but did not find any info. I recently noticed the odometer is not turning, even though the speedometer is working fine. On most other, if not all cars, if the speedo works the odometer works. Does anyone know what could be amiss?? Any help will be appreciated.

By any chance is your ABS light coming on as well? I once looked at a car and noticed that the ABS light was coming on and the odo was not turning. The dealer told me it was the fuse. Don't know if this is correct or not but this is what I was told.

No, I did not see the ABS light on. All the other gauges and lights are OK.

fjp, I have the same problem. My mechanic said he's seen it before. Looks lke I'll probably send it to one of the speedo repair shops in Cali.

fjp (and all)-

My first Rennlist post! (Thanks to all for being so knowledgeable and helpful.) fjp, I have the same problem; it happened when I reset the trip odo. A mechanic told me that a gear (plastic?) can break, especially if the car is moving. If anyone has any advice on a simple and cost-reasonable fix, I'm all ears. Thanks to all again. BTW, I have a blue 97 coupe, 57k mi (I think!), euro turbo bumper w/ air ducts, turbo spoiler, and 19s. I'd like to perform some additional mods, perhaps the suspension (PSS9?).

Spoke with my mechanic this morning and he also says its some plastic gear that does break frequently with theses cars. Coincidentally mine also has mileage in the high 50's (58k)
Thanks for the responses to all.

During my service on my speedo, which is now out of the car, the spoiler light and abs light stay illuminated. I was told that since the speedo is out of the car, the car is fooled since speed is not being read by the computer (which the speedo normal outputs). Consequently, ABS is now off as well since one of the wheel is not providing speed.

Had the same problem. Happened just after I got gas and reset the trip odometer. Dealer (Holbert) sent it to local shop who then sent it out. With speedo out cruise control doesn't function, automatic deployment of rear wing doesn't work. I checked the calibration with Garmen 2730 when it came back, and it was way off. Only way to calibrate it that I could find was by resetting the needle on the speedo. It's still about 5 mph off, but that varies through speed range.

I opted to recondition the speedo versus just replace the gear cause 1) I wanted a new GLASS face (I had a ton of microscratches) 2) I was told that there are a couple gears in there that wear out verus the broken drive gear and 3) 2 out of 3 of my capacitors were aging and not holding a correct capacitance value. I think the DIY gear replacement works for a while, but does not address the other internal components prone to failure in the long run.

I recently repaired mine with a new gear. It's not too difficult if you are handy at DIY projects. I checked the accuracy of the speedo (with a GPS) after repair and it was very accurate.

Did mine via the instructions on the DIY page and it was simple. $30 and 90 minutes later, all was well.
