Default weird intermittent clutch issues

I'm having some intermittent clutch issues that I think are related, but I don't have a good sense of what's going on. My mechanic wants to drop the engine to inspect the pressure plate, but I'd like to have a bit more idea of what's happening before I spring for that. The clutch is a LWF/RS clutch that was replaced 2 years ago and has about 12K miles on it. It was replaced after I started having significant issue with judder/shaking/shuddering on engagement. At the same time the pedal box was rebuilt and the slave cylinder replaced.

After the work, the clutch was great for a while. More recently, it shakes/shudders on engagement intermittently, and the clutch pedal stiffness varies between easy(ish) and smooth, to very stiff. When it's stiff, I can hear something squeaking from under the car when I push the clutch in, but when it's smooth, the noise seems to go away.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

For the record, there is no need to "drop the engine" on a 993 to service the clutch, flywheel or transmission. There is a significant number of hours billed to do this and it involves breaking lots of connections on a 20+-year-old car that should not be messed with unless absolutly needed. My experience is that I was once quoted and billed the hours for "dropping" the engine and when I visited the shop I observed it was not done. If the job was quoted this way go to someone else as competency + honesty are requirements, your mechanics suggestion falls short in one of these two aspects.

It sounds like the clutch spline shaft is dry, causing erratic engagement and clutch pedal feel...

Another possibility is the Clutch Fork Shaft I have seen a couple of these seized solid but both were 964's https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod4...3---996---997/
