Best track day tires?
Just fitted PSS9's and RS bars to my 993, next up is a set of tires for track days (DE events in the US) my question is which tyres do you guys find are best? They need to be road legal for driving too and from events here in the UK.
I have a spare set of wheel with SO2's for daily driving
TIA
John

John, there's a link at the top-right of this page labeled 'Search'. Also in my signature. This subject has been discussed here at least, um, twice. John's 'Welcome' thread at the top of this forum is very good, too.

John,
I currently favor the pricey but long-lasting Michelin Pilot Sport Cup R compounds, but lots of people seem to like the Hoosiers and Toyo RA-1's. If your track experience is limited, I would stick with street tires since R comps can mask driving errors and make you seem faster despite maybe not apexing or tracking out properly, etc. Once you're as fast or faster on your street tires than the drivers with R comps, then it might be a good time to try the sticky stuff.
As Robert suggested, try a search on both the 993 board and the Racing and Driver's Ed board, as this was recently discussed.

John,
As others have said, this topic has been discussed many times, but I have the Pilot Sport Cups.
I went with these because they tend to last longer than the Hoosiers and have much more tread on them for driving to and from the track.
If I had an unlimited budget and trailered the car to the track, I would consider the Hoosiers as people have found them to have better traction. The downside is they have almost no tread, so driving to the track on them is out of the question and they don't last nearly as long as 1/2 of what the MPSCs will last.
Good luck with your decision and let us know what you picked and why.

Thanks all, good advice and good link, I had tried the search engine but my mistake was to restrict it to the 993 forum and/or use english(UK) spellings / descriptions - track day + tyre - rather than DE and tire!!!
looking at Pilot Sport cups at the moment because:
1) I need to drive to and from the track
2) I am only into my second track event yr (six events completed so far - last year)
3) From the messages and the other threads / search they seem to offer the best compromise between handling / cost / life but I now need to price them up!
Any UK rennlisters with a recommendation for where to go for cheap tyres? I live in Glos, work in Oxon and travel pretty much all over the south and up to the North West with work?
Thanks
John

New Hoosiers (S04's) should be considered too (steel belts for street and last as long as Cups, so they say...)

Pzero Corsa certainly worth considering if you are determined to get some road-legal race rubber, can get those from 9m, who are pretty keen on them. I'm sure if you call Colin and ask he'll explain why he thinks they are the best option.

If you get the Michelin's PSC's make sure they are warmed up before you go at it. I have seen two such incidents with solid objects because people have not waited for them to heat up properly (and probably had wrong presures too.) !
It is not a pretty site to see street cars into walls!
