Default Looking for 964/993 Rootwood shift ****

Folks -

Looking to buy a 964/993 Rootwood shift **** (light or dark - doesn't matter). Needs to be in excellent condition (no cracks in the clear coat on the ****). Leather color doesn't matter.

PM me if you've got one to sell!

Thanks!

The shift pattern on these is bonded in so a 5 speed or 6 speed is hard to swap!

Seems like one could buy the shift pattern cap, a hunk of wood and have a woodworker fabricate one for you for a lot less than buying one.

Custom *****

Thanks for the info folks...

The one listed on the bay actually has some markings on the sides. Hate being nitpicky, but... for that amount of coin, no blemishes!

Getting the shift pattern emblem removed is pretty easy. A lot of the rootwood ***** had a leather shift pattern insert which was glued in. Easy to replace with a different pattern. If the shift pattern insert is metal, like the one in the linked auction, and you want to remove it, it's glued in as well and can be removed. You just need to take your time so as to not damage the ****. Drill a small hole into the metal pattern, then you can pry it up carefully. I'd gently warm the assembly first, too, to help soften the adhesive a little.

As strange as it may seem, I'm very partial to the way the OEM wood shift ***** look and feel. Plus, I've used them before in other 968's so I know how to adapt them without too much trouble. Getting something custom made, to look the same, and then mount the same seems like more effort than it's worth, at least to me. Then again, the prices of OEM ones are a hell of a lot higher than they were 12 years ago!!! Something to think about!!!!

Thanks again and if others pop up do let me know!

Jim, I had a rootwood **** in my first 993 and really liked it, so understand where you are coming from. However, I'm partial to spherical ***** and like them even more. The rootwood ones have a few issues as you know They are slippery and the lacquer gets stretched, Which might be the saving grace as you can get a really beat up one and simply refinish it to be like new. The other consideration is the flat spring that holds the setscrew. That one actually breaks and when it does, it's fatal. The **** will still sit on the flat shaft, but it's not quite as secure.

The prices nowadays are nuts. I'd go with heavily used as above or a custom one. for 1/4 the price. $100 or so should get you a good aftermarket **** in nearly-exact shape and size if you work with someone who know what they are doing. which is another issue, of course.

Thanks Nile13!

Guess I should look into refinishing!!! There is a cracked on the bay at the moment. Just not sure how to refinish like new...

Jim, I think the **** itself is not likely to crack. The lacquer can certainly crack and will. The 964 one for $150 on ebay seems to be just the case - simple cracks in lacquer. I'd send the guy a $100 offer and see. Certainly, it's better than trying to find a unicorn. And as many wood (and "carbon fiber") Porsche wheels and ***** that I've seen... most of them have cracks. I think they are not designed for 120F temps in parked cars.

Refinishing is easy. Sand it down, cover with clear lacquer of our choice. A wood shop should do it for a quick $20, I think?

How are you guys re-gluing the leather insert? I feel like the factory had a tool to press it into the metal/cardboard backing......
