Question Reverse Lights

My reverse lights (both) seem to have stop working. Not sure for how long. I checked the bulbs and both are fine. Now, to my question, where is the mechanism that engages the lights? I’ve recently removed my short shifter (RS) and am wondering if I messed something up.

There is an electrical plug that goes in to the side of your transsmission housing.....think it is on the right hand side (passenger). It's an easy one to locate. Make sure that it is in there tight. Good luck !!

if you can locate the connector on the side of the gearbox, typically its a two conductor connector that is grounded once reverse is selected and open when otherwise. Use a ohm meter (VOM) to check this.

I had the same problem; replaced the switch/plug under the passenger side and that fixed the lights. My guess is if both lights are out and the bulbs are good then this switch/plug will be the culprit.

I think it is not that uncommon for this piece to fail.

Does anyone have a picture of what the part looks like? I've looked through the workshop manuals and I can't find it.

I have a photo but the rennlist 'upload photo' link isn't opening for me so I can't post it now.

I'll try again Monday.

If the upload doesn't work, would you mind just emailing them to me?

Hi George,
You can find a picture of the “back up light switch” on performance products web page (also in the catalog). Here’s a long URL.

http://www.performanceproducts.com/product_page.asp?attFlag=0&appFlag=0&productname=Back+Up+Light+Switch&pr oductfamily=Switches&subcat=Switches&category=Electrical&make=PORSCHE&mo d el=911+%28993%29&submodel=CARRERA+2&series=&year=1995&vehicletype=CAR&ke yword=&vendorid=&search=

If this doesn’t work, go to http://www.performanceproducts.com and search for “back up” there. They want about $52 for it.

The wires that plug into the back up switch just push in. The only thing that holds them in is the rubber grommet. This grommet also protects the switch. It’s very easy for these wires to fall out. Check to see that they’re pushed in all the way.

You can also diagnose this problem by shorting the two wires together. That’s all the switch does. It shorts the two together when you engage reverse. Turn your key to “on” and touch the two wires. If they light up, the it’s probably the switch that’s bad. Replacing it is very easy, just unscrew and replace.

Good Luck!
Tom
