Post OT - Gumball rally

Pulled out of Amarillo this afternoon and just at the Cadillac Ranch there were VERY MANY awesome cars heading to Santa Fe, and on to LA - 2 McClarens, several BMWs, Porsches, Bentlys, Rolls, Audis, Ferrari, Limos, my gosh, I have never seen such a collection of cars. On benz passed me 3 times only to have me pass him while he was getting tickets, 3 times! The New Mexico State trooper must of felt sorry for me in my NA tip when he gave me the verbal warning for doin 95...awesome day!!!

Here's some news from Dado who's in the rally, he's driving the Yellow Dakar M3 below.

"Ruff Turbo got pulled over doing 204 today. He is fine and partying downstairs. I am taking the night off today, and saving energy for Vegas tomorrow.

F50 is out of jail and he has thousands in one dollars bills in his glove box. When he goes by small towns he throws them on the street. He has been in jail 5 times already.

I got on tape the RS4 in front of me when his tire came off his rim at 130+ The car is fine, just put the spare on and back on the road.

Cops are at the medium in packs with their video cameras and still cameras cheering us up.

F50 got pulled over yesterday at 187mph and paid the fine. This morning he was the first to leave and I saw him getting escorted by a cop to the police station once again.

Our average speed on the highway is around 140."

New Mexico highway patrol wrote over 30K in tickets as they came through - where is their sense of humor? Actually, as someone said "it's all fun and games till someone gets hurt". Very true - I felt for those folks who were overtaken without having a clue as to what was coming up behind them. I was given a pass thank goodness - my glove box had no money in it!

Am I the only one to think this is incredibly selfish? I mean will we think of this with the same glee and giddy enthusiasm when the first innocent life is shattered? And believe me I'm not one for touchy-feely sentimentality but this seems absurd. This was a movie people. A movie.

Tell me if I'm just being prudish.

No, you're not the only one. If you want to race, go to the track. Although it may seem "fun" to participate in such an event, the fact of the matter is that most of our roads/highways were not designed for vehicles traveling at such speeds. Add to that the obvious danger to innocent bystanders and I think you get where I stand on the matter.

Wonder how the trip through northern Arizona went. The cops there have absolutely no sense of humor, they shoot speeders. My buddy and I got stopped once for 105 and they took him off in handcuffs. If I hadn't been there to drive the car to the jail to bail him out, they would've towed it. Can you imagine Rufus the tow truck driver from Seligman, Arizona dragging your McLaren down 100 miles of Interstate?

Hi

There was an event similar to this staged from london into Russia i believe. A ferrari berlineta i think it was left the road at about 180mph somewhere in poland or russia, complete wreck. They had a camera crew along it was all filmed, had problems with bandits in russia as well as very unfriendly police.

Made good tv but got bad write ups which i agree with. Rich guys driving 1/4 million pound cars through counries where people cant afford to eat. Not very funny.

Anyone who is interested Ruby Wax was filming it

Rob,

it was the cannonball run I think.
Ruby Wax took a film crew, as did the guys who do 'Jackass' on MTV.
Damon Hill drove a Lamborghini for the first leg down to france.
The ferrari was a 355 I believe - a white one.
They left the road at between 140 & 150 mph, cleared a 8 ft high fence, and barrell rolled it.
Both occupants walked away.
Registraction was something along the lines of LOONY.

I watched the Ruby wax program last year, and the Jackass one was on only last week here in the UK.

I agree it is all a bit mad. However, the point about expensive cars in poor countries is a little off-base. They paid highly for the privelege, so one could argue they brought a lot of money to the country as a result.

To see guys claiming to have had only 2 hours sleep out of 60 made me wonder how they could still see the road !!

Cheers,
John.

Guys,

Is this all for real? It sounds more like a movie than real life! Are there any links with more information?

I don't know whether y'all know this, these rallys aren't exactly a new idea.

In the early 1900's a guy by the name of
Cannonball Baker raced his motorcycle across the US (first to do so, I think).

In 1971 the first official "Cannonball Baker Sea
To Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash" was born, and the mastermind of this was none other than Brock Yates, Car and Driver editor. Dan Gurney and Brock won driving a Ferrari Daytona across the country in 36 hours. Gurney got a ticket for 135mph in a 70 mph in Arizona.

They held a couple more races but eventually stopped b/c the media attention was too great.

Most of the movie "Cannonball Run" is based on numberous stories from all the Cannonball races over the years.

The euro one I mentioned before was on MTV again last night.
It was called Gumball 3000, and the ferrari left the road in Russia.

Cheers,
John.
