Washing engine bay - any tips?
Hi All,
I want to wash the engine bay of my '99 C2 Cab and re-treat it. What is the best material to use for this? I was going to use wheel cleaner - to dissolve the grim. To Re-treat I was also going to use a wheel dresser, both products from Auto Glym.
Any better products, tips etc. I have been advised by neighbour - a traffic cop - to leave the engine running and use a jet wash???
Any tips would be appreciated. I did ask my Porsche dealer but they were not too keen to do it - no explanation given.
TIA

TIA,
I'd tread carefully here. Most manufacturers specifically advise against washing modern engines, since the water tends to find its way into sensitive electronic components. This can start all kinds of problems.
I experienced this first-hand after trying to detail my 1991 Infiniti Q45 engine. Lots of electrical gremlins lived in my car for some time after, and I had to replace several sensors, etc.
It's an imperfect solution, but I superficially clean some of the engine components with a simple spray-on and wipe-off regimen, using Simple Green or some other similar degreaser.
Best of luck.

Don't you already have too much water in that engine?
(Sorry, couldn't resist
)
Seriously, done properly you can clean your engine bay w/o inviting disaster. Here's a guide from the experts at Car Care Online: How to properly clean your car's engine compartment.
Personally, I've not had problems cleaning engines, however be sure to cover sensitive areas, use the proper solvents, and IMO, avoid high pressure water sprays.
