Default 993 Porsche dealer clutch replacement

If my local authorized Porsche dealer is going to charge me 8500 for a new clutch on a 993...is it safe to say I should find another dealer for my maintenance?

My car is at a well known Indy shop in Ct at the moment, getting a new clutch...and a whole slew of while the engine is out bits.

The estimate for just the clutch replacement, with OEM parts...12 hours labor, plus parts, was $2500.

my overall estimate for all the while your in there bits...was approximately $7k. That included;
-plug’s, plug wires
-dizzy caps/rotors
-ps belt
-new chain case gaskets/hardware
- new valve cover gaskets/hardware
-fuel filter
-tranny flush
-oil/ filter’s change
-RMS change
corner balance/alignment
and a few other small items...

Skip the dealers, they don’t see enough of these older models. Surely you have a reputable Indy Porsche shop, relatively close to you. That the question that you need to ask on this forum...

good luck!

Be aware that on a 993 the engine need not be removed to service the clutch. This is why it is important to see a written quote that has a labor task breakdown.

I'd love to see a detailed breakdown of that $8500 from the dealer...

Sometimes a servicing entity is simply saying you are not their customer through pricing.

Yeah good point. I think the $8500 includes a training course for the mechanic on how to work on an antique Porsche...

You live in SM and use a dealer to maintain your 993? Really?

But like Magdaddy said, don't expect to spend much less once all of the 'while we're in there' stuff is taken care of...I spent over $7k a few months ago as well.

Yeah actually the car has 184k miles and is on its ORIGINAL clutch! I had it down at South Bay to fix a horn issue of it honking on breaking and the convertible top seems to have an intermittent start stop issue probably associated with the fuse I am guessing. The only other thing they asked me is if I want a new engine air filter for $120....I was so offended by the clutch price I said no. Also, those filters are probably $10 and take 15 seconds to install, I'll do it myself.

It never ceases to amaze me how, for the most part, the Porsche dealer network gouges their customers. They have the attitude that, if the owner can afford a Porsche, they can afford to be overcharged. Yes, they have overhead. Yes, they have an impressive facility. Yes, they have to train and pay their technicians...and, yes, they deserve to make a profit...but there's no reason to charge 2X or 3X over a fair price. They'd get much more business if they quit their usurious practices.

What's their hourly rate? It sounds like they are charging book rate (19hrs) and full MSRP on the parts?
