And you can get the V1 for 10% less if you ask for one that has been returned by a customer...same warranty, same quality, etc. Just bought one for the S6 for a trip to Vegas.

Now if only there was an appealing stealth install....

I bought both! I had the Escort 8500 at first. Returned it and got the V1 instead. I didn't like how longer, thicker and heavier the Escort is. Although the V1 is wider, it is lighter for my sunvisor(modified a cd pouch and hanged it on the visor. (I could tell that the pictures in the comparison above that the Escort is demagnified a little bit to show a smaller size).

But the main reason why I picked the V1 is it's rear facing receiver.
Unlike the Escort, it is on top of the unit, that when I hang it on my visor, it's blocked. The arrows too tells me if there's more than one patrol cars. This happened to me several times now, were the V1 one continued chirping after I passed a radar patrol car and the forward arrow is still going. Escort can't do this...I would think that it's just chirping for some stray signals.

Here's the link of my previous posts with pictures and hard wire installation:

what convinced the testers about the superiority of the escort was the laser jamming device that is an extra 400 dollar option that they incidentally didn't test. the v1 doesn't offer that and is thus likely to become increasingly outdated

Cool V1 fan

V1....don't leave home without it !!

Bear in mind that much of the chatter on the detector can be bogeys from shopping center automatic doors and garage doors and other crap that doesn't matter; this stuff is evident at a glance to the remote display which will display a side arrow which you can simply ignore. (even if legitimate threat, it can't be used at a right angle to the car). If a rear arrow lights, you can slow and wait for a few minutes for Smokey to work his way past you (he will probably be working along at about 80) and then you may proceed. If the signal disappears, pull anchor and hammer down. The arrows are the icing on the cake. Also the multiple signals with the strongest one causing the appropriate arrow to flash is the ice cream on the cake. Far out!!

Remember that someone said jammers are illegal; think about it. But they are out there and the only ones I know that really actually work effectively are the Blinder and the Lidatek. Do the research that tells you why they work and the others don't. You will find how many of them you will need and where to locate them. And then you will discover how to really worry if they are spotted. Not that I would know anything about jammers.

Valentine does what it does better and more effectively than any other tool of its kind available. Something like a Porsche: no substitute.

Do I work for Valentine? No. Has it saved my okole?? I've lost track of how many times. Where was my mind before I got it? Who knows. Get yourself one and then you will know what I mean. Hey, I pull it off the windshield every time I park and re-install it when I resume my trip; its easy if you keep a small bottle of denatured alcohol and a paper towel in the car to clean the windshield where it attaches every month or so. And my remote is mounted on the steering wheel boss just in front of the tach. Farther out!!

I too made the investment. I also bought the hard carrying case - it looks like a black 9 mm gun case. It keeps the unit safe and easy to stow away or to transport to my other vehicles when needed.

I'm very pleased with this unit and recommend taking it down when not on long trips. It's not worth the aggravation of some punk breaking your car window to steal it!

Here's the one I use.

http://www.escortradar.com/srx.htm

I think it pretty much blows away the V1. It is more expensive but offers a wealth of features including laser jamming which I've fun with.

I'm in an area that's notorious for cops just sitting there and hitting cars with Lidar. So sometimes I just park my car across the street and jam his Lidar every time he trys to get someone. Lot's of fun.

What I can't understand, after reading the Escort description, is how this unit can jam a laser beam that is aimed at another vehicle? The laser beam is extremely narrow and that is why the Escort has two receiver units in the front: to cover the area between the headlight and the license plate on either side. Those are the target areas. There is no scatter of the beam like there is with radar, and if laser hits you, you are done unless you can jam the signal immediately and then slow immediately. Anything over 3 - 4 seconds and the officer will know he is being jammed, and that is NOT what you want 'cause that will give you a free ticket to be a guest of the city in a secure cell. The beam is barely wide enough to either cover the headlight or cover the license plate, but not even more than half the front of the car. That is precisely what makes it so insidious.

Sorry, I repeat my statement that only the Blinder and the Lidatek are effective...and I am told, illegal....and if the Escort works on the targeted vehicle it is using Lidatek technology. But not able to jam without first receiving a directed signal.

So just how does the Escort jam a signal aimed at another target vehicle?
Or for that matter, how does it detect it being used at all? Maybe I can learn something new?

Pete,

Are you talking right above the dash, like touching it? I put mine above the rearview mirror and use the remote display. but I would like to find a better spot.

Every time that I've picked up a Laser hit, this is what happens.
1) Escort picks up laser because vehicle was targeted. (from front or rear)
2) Visual & Auditory warning is given.
3) Escort simultaneously jams Laser signal. (Display says its jamming)
4) Driver (I) slows down.

Now in case your vehicle is not targeted, you can still pick up the signal if you are in the line of sight, which is what I do to my friendly Mr. Laser Cop. He sits in a parking lot across from my house. So everytime he targets someone, I pick up the signal since I'm in his line of sight and I jam the signal. Lot's of fun.

The V1 is the 3rd detector I've owned, but is so good, that I won't need to get another. It can be updated by the manufacturer too, but the web site assures me that with my serial #, it is still state of the art as far as functionality goes.

I also vote for V1.

on a related note. check out United States Patent 6,670,905
I have been waiting for it to come out for years, can you image the unit storing the radar counts at each locations, so it can beep at you only if the count is greater than usual.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Radar warning receiver with position and velocity sensitive functions

Abstract
A GPS enabled radar detector (20) that aids in the management of unrelated or otherwise unimportant sources (16), permitting the detector to dynamically improve its handling of such sources based upon previously-stored geographically-referenced information on such sources. The detector includes technology (30, 32) for determining the location of the detector, and comparing this location to the locations of known stationary sources, to improve the handling of such detections. The detector may ignore detections received in an area known to contain a stationary source, or may only ignore specific frequencies or may handle frequencies differently based upon historic trends of spurious police radar signals at each frequency. A Global Positioning Satellite System (GPS) receiver (30, 32) is used to establish current physical coordinates. The detector maintains a list (50, 82) of the coordinates of the known stationary source "offenders" in nonvolatile memory. Each time a microwave or laser source is detected, it will compare its current coordinates to this list. Notification of the driver will take on a variety of forms depending on the stored information and current operating modes.

Novice:

That is a great advancement. Bear in mind however that smart Smokeys hide in areas that are likely to produce bogeys, such as signs in front of shopping malls. You pass by thinking you have a signal from the door openers and it really is Smokey and you're nailed. Bottom line: I prefer the detector improved as you have described it, despite the risks as I mentioned.
