Post Performance Chip Concerns

I just found out that the '98 C2S that I'm planning to purchase tomorrow has an aftermarket chip installed.

1. Should I be concerned?
2. Since I don't have the original chip, can I have a replacement original chip installed? If so, how much $$?

Thanks.

what brand of chip?
my car was "chipped" by Steve W..therefore it's worth 10k more in value (only kidding)
I would say it just depends on the brand of chip

I don't know. I'll have to check.

As long as the car is running fine and the engine isn't detonating, aka - pinging under hard acceleration, I wouldn't worry too much. Try and find out what kind of "chip." There really isn't a chip for the 96-98 993 cars, but rather a remapping of the ECU software. The other popular option is the piggyback chip which intercepts the signals being sent to the engine from the ECU and remaps them. With the piggyback, you can bypass it or have it removed.

Hi Mark, before I add my cents on chipping I have a question for you. Did you work for Apple? I knew a Mark Wheeler, that lived in the same general part of the country, from a past life. Wondering if it was you.

I agree with WideBody. From '96 on the cars have ODBII electronics which can't be chipped but must be either re-programmed or a piggyback chip installed. Either way you should be able to return it to stock fairly easily. Once you find out who did the reprogramming and how far they pushed the engine parameters you can decide if you want to leave it or return it to stock.

Tweeking of the electronics can dramatically change the personality of the car and should be safe as long as the timing isn't advanced too far and the rev limiter isn't raised. I replaced an Autothority chip, that was in the '95 car when I bought it, with a Steve Wiener special. The main reason I changed the chip was to lower the rev limiter back.

Good luck.

Buck,

I never worked at Apple, but I did once own a TRS-80, that was back in the days before Bill Gates said "No one will ever need more than 640K of RAM...

Thanks for the feedback (Widebody too), I'll find out who made the chip when the car gets delivered. Would you recommend the chip you had installed??

Thanks. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
