Question Clutch Problem -Slave Cyl??

Hello all,

Last week, my search for a 993tt came to a successful conclusion. Found a nice '96 with 30K miles. Neither my test drive nor the PPI identified any mechanical problems. Last weekend, I picked up the car and had a great 500 mile drive home. What an amazing car. Still can't beleive it's in my garage.

Now the problem. When I tried to back out of the garage on Sunday (after sitting for a week), I let out on the clutch pedal. There was no take up at all. I had to let the pedal out all the way and stall the car. The car lurched a couple of inches. Upon restarting the car, the clutch engaged at a lower pedal height and I was able to drive off. After one or two gear changes, clutch engagement was back to normal. After driving and the car sitting for a couple of hours, no problems.

The 993 series is still new to me. I've read about the salve cyclinder problems but most accounts involving a clicking sound (which I don't have). Could this be my problem? Do the 993s have a pressure booster for the clutch system? Or, am I looking at a clutch job to start off my ownership experience?

Would really appreciate some education on the 993/993tt clutch system.

Thanks,

Kevin

Maybe all you need is a slave cylinder flush.

I believe the awd cars have a separate boost unit.

30K sounds kinda early for a slave cylinder replacement, much less a clutch job.

Kevin,

I know this may seem obvious, but did you by chance
put it in 6th gear instead of reverse upon your initial
attempt? When you mention it "stalled" something
had to be loading it. This could happen as the reverse
gear is in a different position than most other transmissions.
Otherwise, it could be a sign of a hanging slave cylinder
(usually clicks) or fault with the hydraulics.
If your clutch doesn't slip during hard acceleration
it's probably OK, and at 30K miles it seems
low for this to be failing. Although, the throw-out
bearing may be dry causing the initial hang-up.
Slave cylinder replacement is not expensive, although a
clutch is something that will make anyone really pissed off!
I paid $150 for the slave cylinder replacement and
$1,850 for the clutch (C4S). I'm sure the turbo is even
more pain.

I hope it's nothing more than an isolated incident.

Good luck,

Kevin,
Your TT clutch system is power assisted. Which is different than NA 993s. Let hope its not your slave cylinder as they are very expensive... $450.00 I believe for the turbo cars. I am not familiar with power assisted clutch systems but am guessing that your clutch fluid level may be low. Check it out, it should be in the engine compartment next to the power steering reservoir.

Drove the car again today just to see if the problem was related to the car sitting for a while. No problems. All seemed normal.

When I picked up the car last week, the hydaulic fluid level was fine. Haven't checked it again but will do so just to make sure. In the mean time, can anyone give me a basic description of how the power assist system functions? Might help with troubleshooting in the event that this was not an isolated incident.

Thanks.
