End of Story: It was the Camshaft Position Sensor, also known as a Hall Sender.

Well, thought I would update this thread. Daughter hit a rock on a dirt drive in Topanga Cyn. Punched a hole in the oil pan, oil drained out and engine is now toast. $2,500 for a used engine installed. Cheaper than replacing the car I guess. Kids!

Now I'm back on the volvo sites picking those guy's brains.

Have you checked with your insurance company, on the hit rock? It should be covered

That's an interesting thought. I know that with insurance, how you describe what happens has a lot to do with coverage.
