I use my jacks mostly around the shop so, they are on a smooth surface and never lift more than half a 2500lb car most of the time. For that the HF jacks have been fine. It's clearly a "cheap" jack but, I've been very happy with it for the price. I just came back from the PRI show in Indy last week and there were "TONS" of light weight jacks and the prices seem to be coming down for sure. It looked like for $400 to $500 you could get something really nice. I suggested the HF because I thought it works good for the average weekender. For sure, it's not a pro jack. Anyway, I sure got a lot of good info on this post. Thanks everyone!

Not that these are in the same league as the aluminum racing jacks, but Sears makes a compact 2 1/4 ton trolly jack, weighs about 30#, and comes in a fitted plastic case 22 inches long. Only cost $30 or so.
