What's up with the cross pipe and bypass valve? Does anyone have more information?

I hope this is what I think it is. I had heard that someone was working on a sport muffler system with a "straight-through" bypass valve system that can be operated electronically. It would be great to be able to open up the exhaust for some more power (and sound!) out on the open mountain roads... There is a similar system for the 996. I don't understand the pipes, however.

edit... Now that I look more closely, the pipes appear to be some kind of heat shield.

Upon closer examination, it appears the crossover pipes simply link the "in" pipe to the "exit" pipe and contain what looks to be a vacuum or electro-mechanically operated butterfly valve. If that's the case, when the valve is opened, exhaust could travel directly to the exit side of the system, eliminating back pressure and increasing volume. The location of the valve (if that's what it is) suggests that this is not a muffler bypass system, but rather a backpressure relief system. Exhaust would still travel through both the muffler and the relief pipe simultaneously.

The two aluminum items appear to be heat shields.

That's my best guess.

I emailled Ruf and asked for a price some time ago and have never heard back.

BTW as you may have concluded by now, I am always searching, the thought of stock sound with the ability to have a straight pipe on demand is quite appealing. Let's hope someone knows more.

Cheers

Okay these are facts just in hot off the press at Weissach-Ruf.
Price $1,650 USD or $2,350 CDN
Features a valve that opens and is actuated by an electric switch connected to the rear spoiler harness. If my AltaVista translator is working properly the valve opens at 130 Km/h (80 mph) and closes at 70 Km/h (43 mph).
Ruf claims 7-10 hp according to the sales person, although I did not find this in writting.
Now you know "the rest of the story"

I think I'd connect the switch to my radio. Radio OFF - mufflers OPEN! Radio ON (almost never) - mufflers CLOSED. Yeah, that would do it.

I'd like to "hear" from someone who has these.

Could you connect the valve to a switch on the dash? Turn it off in your neighborhood and on for the track?
