do-it-yourself work on 964 vs 963?
I am considering my first Porsche and am interested in the 964
(93 or 94) vs the 963 (95 or 96).
Can someone please summarize the annual maintenance required of each -
what needs to be done and typical costs if done by a mechanic.
I am also interested in which repairs/service can be done by someone
that has done almost no car work in the past, but is generally a quick
learner. I am interested in this because it can save costs, and also,
I'd finally like to learn a little about cars and have the time now to
start tinkering on the weekends.
Thanks,
Don

Don,
Lots in the archives on this, and also check the site: P-car.com
Robin's site is excellent for DIY + general info, and he's most generous with his time and expertise.
Short answer is the 993 spares you the 964's valve adjustments but at the cost of a truly tortuous spark plug replacement experience (but if I remember correctly, the spark plug interval is two or three times that of the valve-lash).
Both cars have their own set of "issues," but since they're both getting older, many of the well-know problems are/have been addressed. I think your decision between the two is more likely determined by other factors (cost, looks, etc.) than from just a maintanence standpoint. I'd own either/both in a heartbeat. Hope this helps
