used vise grips on either side of the universal joints to check for play.
the upper universal joint, part of the steering shaft, has play and is the problem.

Which is why you lock the rack. Your toe wasn’t changing, the steering rack was moving. Not sure how much play is acceptable, but there might not even be anything wrong here.

the only shop manual reference I could find for the steering rack centering pin is volume IV chapter 44, adjusting toe in-
preliminary operations: using the pin to center the steering wheel, then remove special tool 9116 in bold.
my reading of that is using the centering pin only for adjusting the steering wheel, not for checking or adjusting toe.
is there another reference for the centering pin or do you read that differently?

I'm going to assume no play in the u-joint is acceptable because the lower u-joint(part #4) has no play and my street car steering shaft u-joint has no play.
the track car steering shaft u-joint has obvious play.

Nope. I have always done it this way. There is no rubber in my suspension, all monoball. I lock the rack and set each wheel to zero toe. On my 996 race car I can’t lock the rack. I’m always chasing the toe setting. The smallest bump on the steering wheel, or the tire will move things. Much easier on the 993.

so I made special tool 9116 and have used it a few times while setting toe as pete debusmann suggests.
can't say it is easier because there is the extra step of removing the front bottom panel to access the steering rack.
but it is nice to know the rack is centered and locked while setting toe.
that is enough of an improvement in the process that my steering wheel holder has gone into storage.

easy to make the bolt, its an M10 with 1.0mm pitch, HD had them available.
probably even easier/cheaper to order one from paragon

Hi

I've obtained a M10x1.0 bolt to make the rack centering tool, can you tell me what angle is needed for the cone-end.

A picture of the factory tool shows a small flat on the end of the cone, is this critical?

TIA

John
