Question Lower Valve Cover Upgrade - Opinions?

Recently noticed this thread

https://rennlist.com/forums/parts-ma...ve-covers.html

and was wondering what the consensus was on this.... opinions welcomed.. (newbie here)

Do the OE lower valve covers really warp over time or is this just an opinion?

Anyone do this "upgrade"?

Thanks,

Paul

Save your money...billet valve covers are nothing more than expensive BS bling!

Definitely not an "upgrade", unless of course, your definition of upgrade is to remove money from your pocket and put it in someone else's.

Change the rubber gaskets. That's what causes leaks.

Some have said billet covers can leak and OEM is preferred, so that is the direction I took.

If properly installed with new gaskets and the cap screws torqued in the correct order to the correct value the stock covers shouldn't leak.

Stock covers + new seals + new bolts = dry.

I’m about to put covers back on with new gaskets but was planning on using the old bolts. Are new bolts really necessary?

Go the extra mile with the bolts....I did on my third set and no leaks after 30K miles....

No, but it is recommended, not for the threaded portion of the fastener, but for the hex head.

If the heads are in good shape and are cleaned to the bottom of the hex, they will be just fine.

The fasteners are steel and the internal mating threads are aluminum, so you are not changing fasteners because the thds have been stretched on the fasteners...

In many cases, a high quality allen sockets wrench is not used and/or not installed to the base of the fastener head, so its the fastener heads that usually get stripped during removal, and not the thds if properly torqued to the spec of 7 ft lbs. Over torquing can and will stretch, pull, or strip the internal alum thds.

Nope... they've all been publicly shamed, and run outta town.

I think most people here will agree aluminum valve covers are a waste of money. If you replace the gaskets and properly clean and torque new bolts your stock covers won't leak.

EDIT: Just realized i repeated Andreas.

Replace the bolts, easy to do. When I removed mine, 2 of them stripped, and it wasn’t fun to remove them.

I went with the machined billet aluminum that I grit blasted to remove the machining tool marks and then applied a yellow/golden chemical film coating to prevent any oxidation of the aluminum. I also bought ARP twelve point black oxide bolts. No leaks and looks great!!!! It's the ishts !!!!!!!

The cast valve covers listed in the OP thread 'could' have porosity from how they are made (I highly doubt they are forged due to manufacturing cost). Billet aluminum will not have any of that.
