Post New tires...how long slippery?

Just put some new tires on. I know from archives and now from experience how loose they feel due to A) big ol' tread when I was virtually flat before, and B) whatever that stuff is called that helps them pop out of the mold.

I also know (from the archives and TireRack) to expect 500 miles of "normal" driving for the mold stuff to work it out.

However, if you drive very "spiritedly", will the tires wear in faster? Is the mold stuff just on the outside, or is it throughout the tire and just has to work out?

I have an autocross Sunday and only have 80 miles on the tires thus far, but 30 of those were cranking through the Marin headlands.

For any cops reading this, "cranking" is a special Rennlist term that means, "driving carefully within posted limits at all times". <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Thanks,

JPS,

It's been my experience that as long as you have a good heat cycle in them 24-hours before you compete, your tires should be just fine.

I bought a new set of RE71s back in 2000 for my '86 Carrera. I got some pretty good heat into them that day (but not too hard - don't need to chunk the tires) and then had a POC event the next day. The tires worked well on race day as I won my class by .2ths and set the second fastest stock time of the day!

JPS;

My best advice would be to get out and drive that thing,.,........... The more miles you get on those tires, the better they will be.

New tires really do not develop good grip until they get 400-500 miles on them.

Thanks. There really isn't enough time to get 400 more miles by Sunday...do I run any risk of chunking them or anything?

Jos,

You haven't told us what tires you bought so some answers are harder to provide. It is almost inconceivable that you would get them hot enough to chunk (whatever they are) at an autocross. I've managed a bit of surface melting after repeated runs in the "fun runs" after an event (with Kumho's or street tires) but that's about it.

You're heading up to Santa Rosa Sunday? Have fun but traffic will be a pain due to the Winston Cup at Sears Point (and 100,000 fans).

Slide the car around as much as possible ("Professional driver on a closed course. Dont try these stunts at home."), and you'll be able to scrub off that slippery stuff pretty quickly. Takes me about a half hour.

JPS, I could pick up you car at your work and have 400 miles on it by the end of the day, if that helps you. Exactly one year from putting on a set of 18" Pirelli Assimetricos, I have worn out the rears at 17K miles. Maybe a new record, but not necessarily one I am proud of

Terry,

Two very off-topic comments. First of all, congratulations on racking up the miles on a 98 C2S, a car a lot of folks would park rather than enjoy. Second... Cupertino? I used to live up there, a few eons ago. On Hyannisport Drive. Do you know that area?

I'm with DJ... go grab a couple of nice on-ramps and crank it. Those tires will get broken in pretty fast.

Sounds like I probably worked them in then...for those around the bay area...went a bit before sunset to the Marin Headlands and did about 3-4 laps including that one way section at the very top past all the view points...seems to be what the doctors ordered.

Oh, and Tom...thanks...I didn't think about chunking being heat related...and now I'm questioning my autocross weekend...
