Default Boot won't open

I just went for a nice long and satisfying ride in my 97 993 coupe. When I returned to my garage I pulled the interior handle to open the boot so that I could attach my trickle charger and .....nothing.
Does this mean that the cable snapped or could there be some other explanation?

The cable could have snapped, or it pulled out of the clamp at the latching mechanism.

You'll want to remove the LF wheel and the front half of the wheel well liner to use the secondary cable.

Primary cable may have broken or pulled out at either end. There is an emergency pull - or should be - behind the front left wheel fender liner. Jack up, wheel off, remove front fender liner LH side. You should see a stainless steel cable with a loop in it poking out of a grommet near the battery vent tube I think.

Is there a similar emergency pull for the engine compartment lid? I had a bit of a scare a few weeks back when it almost wouldn't release. I took up some slack in the cable and all is well, now but wondering "what if"?

Not as standard in any year that I know of. It can be easily added. I did this. Cable is in PET. Strongly advise to add. Mine exits behind left rear wheel liner.

With stock NB engine compartment lid/spoiler you can push the latch open with a long screwdriver as well. Not sure if possible with other tails.

If memory serves, there is a DIY over on pelican for installing an emergency cabled latch release for the engine decklid.

Here are some examples...

This works. I suggest trying/practice it to be familiar with it. Pretty easy once you've done it.

Dannycf- Before going for the emergency cable in the wheel well, take the plastic pull handle assy apart.and try pulling on the cable inner wire with pliers. It's not uncommon for the handle casing to break inside where the cable end comes into the back of the assy. Thus when pulling the handle, the whole cable - inside and out - gets pulled in - the internal stop that is supposed to hold the outer cable in place is gone.

I had this happen to me.and had to carry pliers with me for some time. You may be able to check without taking it apart - reach behind and hold onto the black outer cable while pulling the lever. If the whole cable moves then that's what you've got.

If so, let me know - I managed to find a way to fix for almost no money.

Thanks for the heads up on this. Just tried it and it actually does work. Very good to know. You need to have the spoiler up and a good flashlight - and a really long thin screwdriver (or rod) but it's not hard at all.

Thanks again.

If I remember correctly the 993 engine lid latch has a second screw and hole to accommodate a second backup release so it makes installing the emergency cable very simple. I routed mine as I said to the rear fender liner area on the LH side.

The cable is in the PET # 964-512-521-00 Emergency Control.

Yeah, found it in the PET catalog. Had no idea there was even a provision for a backup. I may have to go that route because I have the aerokit spoiler and the screwdriver approach may not work.

Yes, car is not nearby but I think there is a second eyelet and hold down screw in the latch block. I ran the emergency cable along the metal tube and tied loosely with a couple of cable ties. Mine is tied up above the muffler heat shield but I'd have to remove the rear fender liner to get to it. Sometime I'm going to see if I can relocate it to behind the LH tail light a better spot and easier to get to.

Funny, the 997 has a emergency pull cable with the looped end behind the LH tail light. Problem is that you need to have the engine lid open to remove the tail light bolts. The manual recommends using a coat hangar to get in under the tail light and hopefully catching the loop. Not likely and of course you'll scratch the crap outa your paint and expensive tail light lens.....go figure. I moved my looped end to behind the license plate and packing taped down.
