Default Pulling trigger on this 96 C2 80k miles - thoughts?

Hi guys,

This will be my first 993, got a deposit on this one. 96 C2 w/ 80k miles, 6 speed manual, has TechArt aero, springs, exhaust, 18" hollow spokes, LSD, sports chassis. Love the look, not too sure about repairs so I'm going to contact my local shop to get estimates.

57k seem fair? paint seems to be an 7.5/10 interior 8/10

General inspection came back with the following:
DME had a few stored knock señor faults (cleared)
Third brake light out
Sway bar link bushing showing wear
Minor oil leak (chain box, upper valve cover, rear main)
Front control arm bushing showing wear
Recommended replacing power steering belt next engine out service
Front tires are 6 years old
Clutch appears original
No record of 80k service performed
At time of inspection done, brake flush, transmission service, and oil service

That seems high priced. Friend just bought a rare color 96 C4 with sport seats, litronics, rear seat delete, with similar mileage for $55k. Just one data point but....nice looking car! Good luck

At that price, there are plenty from which to choose. What is it about this one that appeals to you more than the others?

I want a black on black 6 spd coupe with hollow spokes, LSD, sports chassis and aero kit are a plus. Everything I've seen so far is about the same price but not the right color or automatic. Would consider white or silver too.

The repairs do not seem out of line for this age of car.

You can always find ones that are less money or more money... Finding one with what you want on it is more difficult. If this one checks the boxes for you, cool. Did the PPI include a compression check & leakdown test? Also, I would recommend having a qualified air cooled Porsche mechanic check the valve guilds. This is a difficult inspection to complete but very important. The valve guilds are known to be a weak link and their failure will result in clogged SAI and a costly top in job. Figure if the clutch is original you are going to be replacing that in the near future. You could easily be looking at several thousand dollars in maintenance and while you're in there stuff. There is a great shop in No Cal; https://fdmotorsports.net/. They know air cooled Porsche and it may behoove you to give them a call for some advise.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Every market on price is different. Looks like a nice car. Get a thorough PPI done. the expensive and NORMAL things this car may need are CV boots, Drive rack repair, SAI cleanout, Lower gaskets ( if they are leaking). I have done all of those to my car.

If you and the car near Silicon Valley, RMG in Sunnyvale are well regarded air cooled mechanics and do PPIs. They know how to inspect the suspension and the engine/transmission so you know what to expect. Saved me a few grand off the sales price when they found a few things that were not found by the seller.

Comp for you. Ask $52k.

Price seems fair if compression and leak down results are good. I recently viewed a similar 993 in NorCal at the same price and offered $52k with no luck. I even reference the ad that Bloose993tt referenced.
I'm still on the hunt!

Good luck!

Sorry, $57K for a black/black, 80,000 mile 993 with oil leaks is quite optimistic. If it were riviera blue or polar silver, the price would be more or less (respectively) somewhat in line. For me, the Techart body stuff devalues the car. The springs and exhaust might be okay. Sports chassis? Is that an 80,000 mile M030 suspension that is fried or is it a recently replaced set of Bilstein HDs?

Here's a white one with similar mileage:

OP, I'm not going to mince words -- you are taking yourself to the cleaners. That is WAY too much for a car that is not low mileage, needs $5-$10K in work, probably will need a top end rebuild soon (because if it had already been done you'd have been told about it). I mean you're easily $10K off what this car should trade hands for. The 993 market is strong and a lot of cars are being put up for sale. What's the rush?

Here's a black C4 coupe with 71K miles in very nice shape that sold on BaT for $47K. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...1-carrera-4-5/

Also, that rear bi-plane wing is absolutely heinous. It's not a Honda Civic, it's a 993.

Thanks for all the input guys, helps me out a lot.

I am still trying to negotiate with the seller on the price. Maybe I'm getting anxious since I didn't get the one at Salt Lake Porsche, someone paid at least $58k for a 65k mile car, I offered 57k and was turned down. It was also black 6 speed with tan interior.

I would be looking at that $52K 993 in Cali! The history seems good and it appears to be in very good condition. Get a PPI, and if it checks out fly out and drive it home! I agree with others: that car for $57K seems a tad high for what it all needs. It doesn't seem to have any history. For that price it I feel like it should. Good luck with your search.
