Post Wobble at 60 mph

Sorry, I know this topic has been covered. I searched through past messages, however, and could not find the string where it was covered. My car has a wobble in the steering wheel around 60 mph. As I remember, the consensus was that this was caused by putting the lugs back on the wheels in the wrong order (i.e., the lug that needs the special key has to go in the right spot). Can anyone help me with this. Want to get wheels balanced tomorrow and thought I'd make sure it was done right. Thanks.

That's one thing to check, but you should probably get your wheels balenced at a high quality shop.

Any shop that has the Hunter 9700. This applies a load to the wheel to get a more accurate reading.

One last thing, check the torque on your bolts too. They should be 94 lbs/ft.

If you are in the Mountain View area, Custom Alignment has the Hunter 9700. I think that it cost $50 to have all 4 wheels balenced.

If you do a search for "Hunter 9700" in the old 993/996 archives, you will get a ton of hits.

Yes, I agree with Jeff. If you have 18" wheels/tires, you need to pay more attention on the balance of them, I have both 17" and 18" and it seems only happen with the 18".

I don't believe the old maxim about the wheel lock location being important is true anymore w/the "newer" aluminum lock lugs used on the 993 which, supposedly, weigh the same as the regular lugs. I locate mine opposite the valve stem just so I don't have to hunt for it.

Agree w/Jeff that the most likely cause of a speed specific vibration (wobble?) is wheel/tire imbalance. Might have lost a weight, etc.

I second Jeff and KC about Custom Alignment and the Hunter 9700. I have 18" wheels, and Custom got the balance right the first time after two other independents had failed with the wrong equipment.

Had the same problem (@60mph) & had them dynamically balanced. HUGE difference. Smooth up to 100+. My only complaint was the method used when the shop put the wheels back on - air wrench. FWIW, the wheels are 17" cups.
