Default anyone had a top end rebuild?

since i'm looking at replacing my high mileage 993 (RIP) with another high miler; the top-end rebuild possibilty comes to light. has anyone had theirs done? if so, what was the cost?
happy new year everyone, best wishes.
Kyle.

About $6500 on my previous '87, 8 years ago, and without new pistons. It all started with worn valve guides. Were I to have to do it on the 993, I would get the 3.8 kit past my chief accountant as a "safety precaution" and "while we are in there", and "the labor is the same, regardless of what parts go in, so you might as well do it right". Maybe just ship it to Ruf so I save on the rental car for my next trip. How far could this reasoning go? :0

My 993 failed a leak down test about 1 year ago. I had the top end rebuilt to the tune of $5,000. Did not do any kits...just tried to anticipate what I might replace and renew since the motor was out of the car. Did things like the hydraulic lifters, clutch, CV boots, valve guides, etc.

Boris, where are you seeing this advertised? I looked on their website, but didn't see it.

Excellence or Panorama or my local PCA nugget. Give them a call - I just remember the price and thinking if I ever rebuild my motor i'd do the upgrade for $3,850.

Cheers,

Got mine done for free because the dealership left a bolt in my intake system after installing the new wiring harness for the recall. Only wish I could have afforded to go with an upgrade then.

When I had my engine fixed for the dreaded airway carbonization, the total was about $5500.

This included the heads being refinished, all new valves, guides, new clutch and all 24 O-seals being replaced. the crank case was opened only enough to get to the O-seals, and nothing was needed to the pistons, rings, cylinders etc.

As I don't track the car, I'd wouldn't go for the 3.8 upgrade. Lot of money for a difference I would never get a meaningful return on.

I think it seems cheap because it only includes p's & c's. Its not the 'complete' 3.8 kit that we all covet...

"When" I get my valve job done (i.e. CEL), it will cost me around $5k, according to my mechanic. However, I may get some upgrades at the same time (clutch, flywheel, etc).
