993 V 964
I'm visiting from 964 forum with a question!
Should I sell my 964 C4 and get a 993 C4? I calculate this will cost me approx. £15K (sell 964 for £20K and buy 993 for £35K).
Performance would appear to be very similar, so what do I get for my £15K?
Thanks in advance
Piers

IMHO: You have a fine car already. These cars last forever. The 993's rear end is a radical redesign in respect to the 964. It is a pressure-cast, two piece alloy subframe connected to the body shell by rubber brushes. It provides better noise isolation, the subframe also acts as a rigid mounting point for the multi-link independent suspension system. It brings improved straight line stability. I, personally would not consider that alone as a reason for switching. I would just say if you prefer the looks of the 993, then go for it, otherwise keep your 964.
Hello,
I've had them both- '91C4 and now '96C4S.
The only thing I miss about the 964 is the exhaust note.
The 993 is still the go-cart like beast, atrue 911, but has a smoother less obvious AWD, and more body curves but loses the prominent front fenders that define a classic 911. So the latter changes are a toss-up. The 6 speed gear box is unnecessary and no better than the 5 speed. Mechanically my C4S is perfect, the 964 was the worst car I've ever owned from a reliability and service aspect.
If you've got a good sound 964, hold onto it. I would have, but I do like the 993 phenotype alot, it gets alot of stares.

I'd go for the 993.
Search the old archives about all the mechanical reasons etc.
Looks is all about what you like the best, but I must say, I like the 993 much better!
Anyway, it pretty much is a win/win situation, both are great cars

Piers,
why not pop along to the Blue Ball in Walton on the hill next wednesday and take a look at a few 993s.
If you want directions email me direct, else try something like www.streetmap.co.uk and put in walton on the hill.
Secondly you could look for the 'uk rennlisters surrey area meet' post, as there is a web link to a map on there.
Cheers,
John.

I have just switched from a 964 C2 to an equivalent 993 C2.
As yet I have a limited impression of the 993 but here are my initial impressions;
993 looks are great (Mine is Poalr Silber)
964 exhaust note is the best ever ( mine had the final muffler bypass pipe, G-Pipe) The 993 quite frankly sounds terrible
My 964 repair cost totalled 60 GBP approx. 45 USD during 20 000 miles over 3 years, so I don't understnad people who claim that the 964 had inferior quality.
All in all (especially if I lived in the UK where LHD 964's are basically free)I would stay with the 964, and I would probably change to a C2 in 964 guise is far superior to the C4.
Hope this helps.

When you think about it, very few people complain about excessive problems with their 93-94 964s, by which time all (or close to all?) the early model bugs were eradicated.
With respect to build quality, some people believe the 964 is actually superior, as is it was the last 911 produced using the old (more expensive), non-Japanese influenced assembly techniques.
I've had my 93 model 964 for a few months now. My friend has a 94 993 for about 6 months now but I've been driving it while he is overseas (with his permission).
I agree that the 964 has a great exhause note. However, the responsiveness of the 993 is more direct to accelerator input.
The 964 is a classic style and I think it has a more solid feel in the steering wheel.
Both cars have had little if anything spent on them (air con regas).
My car was AUD $35,000 less than my friends 993 but he had 63,000 kms and my 964 had 120,000 kms.
Anyway, they are both great and it has to come down to finding the right car for yourself depending on all your preferences.

Piers,
sorry for the delay in replying - working from home on Friday, and off yesterday.
We should be there around 8pm-ish.
Last time we were sat just inside the door on the left. Just look for a 911 & PW mag on the table (a bit less tacky than a carnation or rose !!
)
If you can't see any 993s or 964s in the car park, then maybe you are the first to get there !
Possibly see you tomorrow night then.
Cheers,
John.
