DIY bonanza (long-curb rash)
Well Since the engine tray debacle I decided to push forward
with my DIY workshop. Sorta like ViperBobs only alot
less ambitious. He removes and replaces Engines
I remove scratches.
My first DIY today was to jack up the car
with jackstands and a cheap floor jack I got at sears for
$25 (including jackstands!!) i have been looking for the
racing jacks you all talk about and I thought Sears had
one but when i went over there they had this one for $40
including Jackstands and it was on sale and I had a coupon
I figured even if the jack sucks the stands were worth
$20. But it works ok but my car is not lowered yet.
So that was DIY #1.
after JimBob Jumpback kindly
pointed out which tray is correct I removed that
DIY #2.
DIY#3 was both my rear wheels came with significant
curb rash so I followed the DIY here:
http://www.funcarsonline.com/ubbthre...=5&o=7&fpart=1
I got everything he said but I had to get Dupli-color
wheel coating WP101 Silver then Dupli color WP103 clear
coating instead of the wurth products he used.
My wheels had huge gouges in them much worse than
the ones on the web site mentioned above and it still
worked. I would remove the wheels from the car though
as he did it while on the car and I did not want any over
spray. So I took the wheels off and went outside in the
sun. I used the same grit sandpaper he used, 400 being the
finest.
I also dremeled down the gouges first with a tiny little rock grinder
He did not use that
step- but I did because of the damage.
I would also recommend painting the whole rim edge to make it
look uniform instead of wiping down the area around the damage
with paint thinner because it just did not seem to match. if
you paint the whole rim edge it looks like it matches fine with the
rest of the wheel. I also had paint damage on one of the spokes
on my turbo twists so I masked off the one whole twist and
sanded it down with 400 grit and painted just the one twist and
it matched the rest of the rim as well. Not too hard even for
someone who has to ask which tray to pull off. One rim took me
about an hour the other more damaged one took 2 hours
because the bondo did not harden that fast in todays 55 degree
temps. Total cost of supplies-$20. Total saved probably $500
One last thing- I did this in the sun on my drive way while my
two boys were shooting baskets. I would delete that step
because I got hit in the head about 4 times. Send the kids inside!
Tommorow weld the check strap! I have already ground the
paint down around the hinge.

OG, do the repaired wheels show any sign of being out of balance - vibration?

Terry no sign of vibration up to 140mph
(that was done on a closed track in maylasia)
The material removed is so miniscule I dont
see how it would matter, even with the gouges.
the gouges were small but compared to his website
huge.

Nels,
I thought about it till afterward. I did not think I was going to
be succesful, so I did not bother. If I get a chance today I will
post some after shots. But it was quite a difference. Amazing
just goes to show you how good the info is in this place!! That
even I could do it.

Sounds like you had success! It's great what we as a community can do with a little bit of knowledge, good communication, and some time! I can't wait to see the photos.

OG,
can you provide some details about that Sears jack+stands? I think a run upto Sears this weekend is on my agenda :-)
Is it low enough to jack up under the engine - my car is SUV ride height and will stay that way until I can buy a TT...

This is not difficult. IF you are intelligent enough to own a 993 you can do a curb rash repair!!!
its minor body work that might give you the nuts to do more!!!
I dont know what the color is. I just used the color in Kragen. It was REAL close to the original color
so close I could not tell the diff!!!

thanks og ! btw: your idea of doing the whole edge of the rim makes total sense.... i assume it was spray can paint too. great. i may run it through my airbrush as i'd be able to control it better. but does sound like a no-brainer.
