Sound of rushing coming from closed sunroof at speed
I just purchased a 993 and my only complaint was the noise coming from around the closed sunroof when on the freeway. It generally sounded like some air was making its way through the seal. The sound would come and go. I took it to a reputable Porsche mechanic, they replaced the seal (including some screws that were apparently loose) and I brought it home today. As soon as I got in on the freeway the sound was worse than before and incessant. It sounded as if a flap was protruding up from the front of the sunroof and creating friction against the air. I had to open the sunroof to make the drive home tolerable. Just looking at the seal, it seems okay. It protrudes maybe a millimeter above the roof. Any thoughts on what this might be if not the seal?

Stage one: Tape with some duct tape on the roof to cover the gap between the roof and sunroof and go for a ride and see (hear) if that solves the problem.
After that You will know if it is the seals or not!
And keep us informed!
Kind Regards, Railmaster (Who is driving a sunroof delete 993....)

Good advice above. If noise is not the sunroof it’ll be the front windshield seals not seated or laying right. This can happen with a fubar WS install and is the next place to look. I once drove my car without the front WS trim seal and it sounded like a tornado in the car at speed.

LOL Joe - gummiflege is a seal protectant (with a funny name). It makes old seals soft and pliable. I use it on all of my cars and it’s a great product:
It comes in a small squeeze bottle with a sponge on top (like shoe polish). I’ve had wind noise disappear just by a 5 second application. Maybe it doesn’t fix this problem, but at least you can rule out the most simple and inexpensive option first!
I highly recommend it.

Actually Gummi pflege = rubber maintenance or care , if pflege was used in a medical sentence I would have said care, but for mechanical things I would say maintenance.
I try to treat the rubber twice a year, just before winter helps prevent seals from sticking , if you live where it snows.

FWIW, don't use duct tape to cover the sunroof perimeter. Good duct tape is very sticky and could lift up the paint. Not likely, but why risk it. Masking tape has a much weaker adhesive and will do the same job in this case.

It turned out that the issue was not the sunroof seal, but a faulty installation of a non-factory windshield by the prior owner's mechanic. There were gaps in the sealant that let to air entering the cabin. I replaced the windshield with factory glass and problem solved. Of course, that led to finding surface rust below where the windshield sits (common in 993s and 964s)...great cars but it never ends.
