Post 993 brand new prices

Does anyone know how much the 993s were when they were brand new? In real terms (with inflation included), today's 996s seem cheap in comparison if my recollection of prices around the £50,000 were correct.

If so, is it that Porsche's margins were higher in those days or were the 993s more expensive to make? The common parts that the 996 and Boxster share may contribute to lower costs.

The last '98 993 Carrera S had a base price of $63,750 while the '99 996 Carrera fetched $65,030 in the US. Also, the 993's were more expensive to make. When Porsche introduced the 996, they told us that it was costing them 47% less to manufacture than the previous (993) model.

Base price on your 1995 993 (coupe 2 wheel drive) was $59,900.00

Destination charge (on US versions) was $725.00

My lightly optioned '95 coupe shows a total sticker of $63,298.00

Nice deal I say.

Not doubting you whatsoever, Viken, but do you remember your source for this information? That's a pretty staggering statistic.

Thanks!

Yes, "they" as in PAG. It was openly published in every 996 introductory article and was part of the original press releases too. Also, if it makes you feel better, the 993 was the beginning of the cost-cutting revolution. So, the 964 is technically the last of the "built to last" quality 911's.

Remember it well, it was part of the whole Japanese efficiency expert PR campaign - where they railed on the "old Porsche" and their made-by-hand ways.

Glad mine is over engineered and made-by-hand, by craftsman we may never see the likes of again *Sniff-sniff*

Thanks Viken. Guess I haven't really paid much attention when/since the 996 was introduced. Really, I didn't/haven't. Not to initiate the latest chapter of the 996 vs. air-cooled 911 controversy. The 996 is--of course--a fabulous car for many people.

On the surface, it seems odd Porsche would publish openly how much cheaper the car is to produce, while charging more money for a car that costs less to produce. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I got the Porsche "Kardex" on a 1998 C2 Artic Silver Cab that reflected an MSRP of $93,600 (List). Pricing a new 2002 C2 Artic Silver 996 with the same options came up with an MSRP of $96,924. Inflation aside, with a 47% production cost savings, it is no wonder Porsche's profits are "Still Riding High" as reported in the April/May Christophorus Magazine in the Stockholders' Meeting section. The chart shown in the magazine shows the profits increasing each year achieving a 100% gain since the 1999 introduction of the 996's.
