Post handy dipstick trick

I noticed a few days back the age old question of what the level should be and proper wiping techniques to see the actual level as the oil curls around the spiral end of the dipstick. Several years ago, I used a small drill bit (about half the width of the dipstick) and created shallow dimples on the stick to mark low, middle and high. Not deep enough to compromise the stick's metal, but enough to catch the oil, and help you make sure you've read it right. Of course, you could dimple it in a few more places for accuracy, but three has worked well for my last 75K miles!

How did you know where to put the dimples?
