hi folks,
i have a '95 993 and the transmission seems to be a bit rough.
Problem: When shifting from 1st to 2nd it tends to grind just a bit.
I checked the linkage and that seems ok. Would anyone have any other recommendations. I was thinking of draining the tranny fluid and replacing it with synthetic.
Any other ideas?
Cheers,
Boris

Boris,
Does the grinding only take place when the transmission fluid would be considered "cold"? Does it then stop or at least get much better after things have reached operating temperatures? If so, this is typical and considered normal. Robin has a write up on his web site about his attempts to get rid of this problem with different transmission fluids and the varied success he had. Double clutching will eliminate the problem.
If the problem is more persistent than the 1-2 shift when cold then your sychros are probably getting worn.

Brian,
It does appear to go away once the car is warmed up. I'll look for Robin's site and see what he found. It is typically the shift from 1st to 2nd.
Cheers,
Boris
