Default Rear main seal installation question....

I'm about to install a new rear main seal in my '95 993. The workshop manual says to install it 2 mm below the flange of the crankcase. The one I removed was flush with the flange, not recessed. It sure would be easier to install it at that same level -- flush with the flange, and not bother with recessing it 2 mm. Which is correct?

Needs to go in those additional 2mm... or it may leak. There is a special tool for pushing it in. In my 951 I managed to use a piece of Sch 40 PVC pipe of the same size of the RMS to push it in all the way.

Another great tool for pressing things is your classic socket set. All kinds of sizes.

Matt, do you work with Jay Gratton? Please tell him to send me an email if you do...

You should get the seal all the way in. Maybe since yours was flush that is the reason you are changing it now... Just a thought, or is this preventative work?? Good luck.

I was doing some clutch work and found the seal wasn't really leaking yet, but wasn't dry either. I'd use a socket but it's something like 4" diameter. I can see a piece of PVC sch. 40 as a good tool to use. I can easily make up a wooden 'punch' that will get it to the correct depth.
