Default Distributor wiring help

I have about 35K on my distributors and am in process of replacing the caps and rotors. I pulled the wires off dist #2, checking numbers on the caps and they matched the wire numbers as expected. In pulling wires of dist #1 I find the wires on #5and #6 cap location were switched. The car seems to start and run well. I thought possibly the wires were switched at the spark plugs but the plugs were wired correctly. Am I missing something everyone else knows? Is it possible it’s been wired incorrectly for 35k and runs well? HELP !!

Don't pay attention to how anything is labeled. Just follow the firing order and you'll know if each wire is attached to the right distributor cap nipple and spark plug.

If you're using the stock wire assembly, it's pretty hard to mess up. All the wires are the correct length for the cylinder they connect to.

My plan is to wire dist #1 according to firing order, which also corresponds to the numbers on the cap, and connect only distributor #1 to its coil and see how it runs. If it runs well connect #2 wiring. Does this seem sound?

If you have the correct caps and wires, they are all marked. You should be able to follow that and be correct. Follow the wires and make sure they are indeed going to the correct plugs.

You should also have this decal with it all laid out

Thanks for the advice. I Re wired everything the way I thought it should be and she runs well. Is it possible it was wired incorrectly for 35K miles?

Maybe not for 35k miles but perhaps for as long as whoever dicked with it last.
