993 Air Intake System
Hi,
I saw something on ebay that caught my eye. I have been reading about modifying the airfilter housing for an additional 8 HP. What are the toughts about this and is this a good idead to do?
I already have the BMC filter so not sure if this would be worth the money.

Thanks!

Chris,
It looks like a factory airbox with extra large
holes drilled for "motor sound". The factory
motor sound airbox has about a 100 small holes.
Porsche probably designed this for optimum sound.
The air scoop intake should bring in colder air.
However, you risk intake of rain. The air box should have holes drilled at the bottom to drain
water. I doubt this air box will add the
claimed 8 HP, more like 2-4 HP.
I modified my air box by removing the silver intake trumpet from the airbox cover and
unplugging the clutch vent hose.
This added about 50% more air flow.
It improved the factory motor sound giving it extra roar at high RPMs and provided a slight
power boost.
All the best,

No personal experience, but that vendor has not been favourably viewed by others on the board - I'll say no more.
Also the snorkel is designed to ensure cool air gets to the engine from a fixed spoiler setup - drilling the airbox has the opposite effect.
Cheers, Maurice

If you want to play w/your airbox for better sound, go for it. Drilled holes will get you most of the motorsound package effect - motorsound mufflers, or Robin's RSR, will do the rest.
If you're looking for +8HP (which BTW I seriously doubt you'd notice) you'll need more than an electric drill or new filter. Meaningful HP gains for our cars is expensive.
There are many archived threads on this topic, here are 2:

Does anyone know what this trumpet costs? (p/n 993.110.360.51)
Were they a optional part for the 993?
Does anyone use it on their 993?
Thanks,
Chris

The part is for a Turbo, it is used to get fresh air from the higher fixed wing. Cost is around 50.00 I have it on my car as I have a Techart wing. I think a drilled or motorsound air box may negate some of the benifits of the snorkel.

List price on the Turbo trumpet air intake was $59.25 when I bought mine last March. I drilled my airbox before I got the turbo extention, but decided to leave it, as it makes such a nice sound at WOT. I fugure if I go fast, the ram air will ovecome the warmer air that could be sucked in through the motorsound intake holes.
There is also an different extended rubber extention to the fresh air intake on the left side of the engine, but I don't have that part number here. About $16 if I remember right.
Both parts are for cars with tails only.
