How much should a paint job be on a 993tt? I have some rock chips on the front bumper and wheel wells. The front bumper has a small crack that will be repaired. Also the rear bumper has a scratch. I have been quoted close to $10K for the body work and painting everything except the roof. Is this reasonable? I live in Greensboro NC. Any suggestions?
Cheers

Konrad,
The price of the paint job could very well be 10K. It will depend on the quality of work the shop is know for. Most regular body shops that I've seem would never charge that much. However,a shop that does restoration including frame off could easily charge much more than a regular body shop. I don't know what not including painting the top of your car for that price is about. It does seem quite odd.
There is a shop in Charleston, SC that does restorations if your interested in more information e-mail me and I'll send you their website information.

I have heard many times of people paying that much for paint work. It is way more than average for paint, but these high-end paint jobs are the kind where the car is actually disassembled so you really wont see ANY signs of paint work what so ever. They typically take a long time to complete due to the detail work they do as far as wet sanding and polishing etc. I would be weary if they said it would be done in less than two or three weeks.

What happen to the days of Earl Scheib for $69.95? I actually knew a guy that had a VW Bug done there back in the late '70s. Over spray EVERYWHERE!!! I don't think they use a single piece of masking tape. <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" /> I also knew a guy that did a paint job himself.....with a ROLLER!!!!
In the world of body work and paint, you get what you pay for! If you're looking for a show car job, it could be way more than $10k. I've seen jobs done that had 250 hours of prep alone before paint. At $50/hr, that's $12,500!!! I would think a reasonable rate for a complete job, not changing colors, would go in the $6k-7k range for a really good shop.

I think Steve's 6k - 7k range sounds about right for most good paint shops. High ends and custom jobs for car shows will run over 10k, as others mentioned. For 10k you should expect perfection. But if the rest of your finish still looks good, you might consider just having the problem parts repainted. I've seen "blends" on noses and fenders recently that I could not tell were resprays.

Oops, sorry to hit "add reply" too soon....
I think that $10,000 for a very high quality paint job, and $6,000 for a routine job--no color changes or damages--is in the ballpark.
However, why not take the point of view that its just a car--a really nice car. The cars are made to be enjoyed and eventually "used up", like skiis. I love detailing my car and keeping it nice for along time (my 96 Saab has one door ding only, and I'm having it fixed; Porsche similar). But there is a limit to the cost-effectiveness of a total repaint.
I would say you paint the bumpers alone, and blend the fenders if you really are bothered by the stone chips there. A high quality shop (the kind that would do a $10-12,000 paint job) would do a really nice, much cheaper job on the bumpers and fender blending.
Best, Mike

$69.95???? WOW, that's expensive! I remember when their ad was "We'll paint ANY car for $29.95!"
RE 10K for the paint job; for that price I would get a written description of what they will disassemble. I would hope that all trim and glass would be removed to avoid ANY potential for overspray, and the job would be a concours-winning redo. Just keep in mind that (in my experience) a repaint is not as durable as an overn-baked factory paint job.
Look at some of the cars he's done - hopefully before and after jobs. Ask in your local Porsche Club region as to how good he is (and if you're NOT a member - for shame, for shame!!!!!!)
