Post Big Reds, how big an advantage?

(Edited to correct a math error...that pesky calculator told a lie!! I have told it, only lie during business hours!!!)

When I bought my car, the previous owner had installed the Big Reds: They were not an option on Carrera narrow body cars, or Carrera S cars, but were included as standard equipment on the Carrera 4 S cars. No where in the POC rule book does it discuss this upgrade...I have been told if I am really concerned, paint them black. I want to run with the Big Reds and me legal in Production class hence my concern.

I have been told that the biggest advantage of Big Reds over stock 993 brakes, the larger surface area of the pads allows them to run a little cooler, a little longer, until they too heat up. The Big Red rotors are a wee bit larger as well.

Porsche Owners Club has ruled on changing early model M calipers to A or S calipers. They have ruled this is a Production Class mod, there is a 25% increase in brake pad surface area. Big Reds, delivered as standard on the 133 Lb. heavier Carrera 4 S car, provide a nearly proportionate increase in brake pad area, approximately 31%.

If the increase is nearly the same (25% VS 31%), I would think that Big Reds on a Carrera narrow body would also be a Production modification. I am asking the POC Competition Committee to either include, or exclude with an explanation hopefully, allowing Big Reds in Production Class.

Also note that the Big Reds are standard on the Carrera 4 S car, a car that has the advantage of AWD, but it does weigh 133 Lbs. More than a standard Carrera coupe.

We'll see how they respond....I may be fighting a hopeless battle, but I don't want to run in V2 <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />

Martin,

So, would a stock C4S be thrown into MP, or MS? Does the extra 133 lbs from the C4S offset the performance of the Big Reds? I know when I raced w/ the POC in '99 & '00 a stock C4S was in MS (or at least that's how some people classified them).

The Big Red has more like 33% greater pad area and more importantly 12% more rotor mass to go with it. Both are fairly large advantages. IMO this is a safety issue and should be allowed. I have no idea what the powers that be think.

Just to clarify, they changed the rules. 993's (NA, at least) are now in L class.

I believe, since the big reds are stock, it would remain in LS.

Martin, now that would be a twist....painting Big Reds, black...

Since I gather that it is common to overheat 993 brakes, I would think the POC would realize Big Reds are used more for thermal capacity than braking ability. Especially if one uses tires with treadwear ratings over 150 or so. In that case, brake upgrades wouldn't do much for ya. IMHO...
