Post Rust problem

Hi guys

Anyone know the best way to stop your rotors (discs) from rusting up. Its driving me crazy.I have just replaced them and the centre part is starting to go that familiar shade of brown. I'm thinking that there is something that you apply that stops the rot...is there???

I saw a couple cars that used a high temp gray spray paint and it looked fine. The guy I talked to did not drive the car to the point the brakes would see extreme heat and he reported no problems with the paint staying.

I plan on doing mine next time I have the wheels off.

Thanks Pete but I'm thinking along the lines of some kind of protective coating rather than paint. I would prefer the bare metal rather than painted look. Can't help it...just want her perfect. Maybe I just need therapy.

Zinc dark gray paint is almost identical in color works very well for this. I have not had any problem with heat affecting the paint (95% zinc and can be welded). It’s made by Wurth and Griot’s Garage has a private label paint.

Buy the Porsche rotors. They come painted and no rust.

EDIT: hmm I walked away from my desk and didn't refresh when I came back and now I see Greg beat me to the punch on the advice.

my favorite look so far after doing three cars is to remove the rotors, sand blast them and clear coat w/a hi temp paint. they look clean and mean.
this is also the easiest to keep looking good.

if you have factory two piece rotors you can also take them apart and polish the fasteners while you're @ it, this also looks sano.

or you can buy the two piece alum hats to give the racer look.

My replacement rotors had unpainted hats as well. They are factory replacements, had a 993 part number, etc, but the unpainted hats started to rust immediately. I painted them black, and it looks fine. To me, it looks better than the galvanized color that the original rotors had. It was very easy to do. I removed the wheels, lightly sanded the rotors, and painted them with a 1” brush. It only took a couple of hours to do all four. I didn’t need to remove the rotors. I made a special point not to paint the head of screw that holds the rotors in place, as I didn’t want them to get full of paint. This area is covered by the wheel anyways, so you don’t see it. I used “Barbecue Grill” paint that I bought at Home Depot for less than $10, and it’s held up just fine, even after several track events.

Next time I need to replace the rotors, I’ll try to paint them first, before the shop installs them.
