Graham

last issue of 911 & Porsche World featured a 520 HP SC hill climb car. It used a Cetoni centrifugal compressor with its own gearbox, belt driven from the engine. These SC's were made for Tech Art who used to offer this SC upgrade for mucho £££££.

Its a good article, the SC runs 16 psi boost via intercooler, low compression pistons (3.8 litre upgrade too, BTW!). All controlled with a Haltech ECU.

BTW, for 320 BHP at the wheels, the enfine must be making about 420 HP (to allow 15% drivetrain losses AND 40 HP consumed by the supercharger.

Will the rods etc cope with all this extra BMEP and load??

I assume so, or Mark's engine would be broken by now!!

BTW Mark, I found a place that does oil analysis if you want to keep on eye on how the internals are bearing up without having to strip the motor down.

Given all the advantages of superchargers, why does Porsche use turbos?

TPC SC gives 315 hp at rear wheels (before 210hp). At least +100 hp @RW. In torque TPC gives 283 ft/lbs, before 196.

graph from <a href="http://www.turboperformance.com/porschef.htm" target="_blank">http://www.turboperformance.com/porschef.htm</a>
I calculated the prices either: U$ 66 per hp and U$ 80 per lb/ft.

Thanks John,

I might take you up on the oil analysis. I do change the oil every 6000 miles now.

Cheers, Mark.

Mark, Graham,

Thanks for your answers to my questions. Sounds like a supercharger is the way to go.

I searched for a Whipplecharger twin screw system for the 993 but couldn't find anything other that the link that was posted above on the RS. The search for German Auto company didn't come up w/ anything really usable. I haven't heard of a company by that name, but it sounds like a neat system.

Anybody else with better luck on German Auto or a Whipplecharger?

One thing that concerns me is that TechArt had a supercharger system and they discontinued offering this. Was this due to problems and/or issues with reliability?

Thanks,
*****

The Techart system is a very expensive and rather different installation to the TPC-type bolt-on kit. It involves internal modifications to the engine and increases power to 462hp!!

See <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=003460#000000" target="_blank">this thread</a>

I assume you have found many sources of Whipple/twin-screw superchargers but no kits, correct? Perhaps a custom fabrication is the way to go, or of course the TPC kit (if you are willing to settle for the non-twin-screw variety).

Some more information:

I found out that German Auto had changed its name to Superchargers of Knoxville. Now that's a name that we left out during our discussion and that I've seen in some of the Excellence magazine ads in the past. A google search doesn't turn up any contact information readily.

I remember not hearing good things about these guys, something about service was lacking ...

I haven't heard much about them of late.

I talked w/ TPC today and asked a few questions regarding the use of the kit under racing conditions and was told that detonation was the main issue and if one wanted to run the vehicle at heavy loads for extended times then 110 octane should be used to avoid pinging. The electronic box does retard ignition when it detects detonation.

Locally here in Northern California, the guys that do installations for TPC are The Racer's Group in Sonoma. Spoke w/ Ryan there and it looks like about 28 hours of installation @ $85/hr. Kit + installation is about $9.2K to $9.5K, a bit more than $7K somebody stated here earlier.

He's working on an install now for a 97 C2. He said he'd be finished in a few weeks and I might get a ride in it. There's other work being done to the vehicle so that's what's taking it that long, a normal install would be less time (3 days or so).

Hope this helps.
