I have an occasional metallic clonk from the right-hand corner of my car. It only occurs when going over some, not all, potholes.

All bearings and bushes associated with the suspension are in good condition and no play can be felt in any joint.

The car is fitted by Bilstein HDs - are these known to emit a metallic clonk when worn?

I had the same problem. Check the alignment of the drop link mount on the shocks. The sway bar may be hitting the lower control arm when one side compresses.

I'd still like to hear if anyone has had a metallic clonk that did come from a Bilstein shock. A Google search did produce some results from forums for other cars - just wondering whether anyone on here has had, or has heard of, clonking Bilsteins.

How many miles on them?

Just under 8K miles.

I'm not trying to find out whether or not my shocks are worn. I'm trying to find out if they are worn, is a metallic clunk a symptom of that wear.
