Default 'Normal' Oil Use

Hi,
How much oil should I expect my '96 cab to use after 3000 miles?
Thanks,
S

Between 0 and 2 quarts is acceptable. 3 quarts would be starting to push it.

Over 3 quarts and it's time to look at where the oil is going.

An undetectable amount. If your car is burning a detectable amount of oil, it's because something is worn. 1 quart per 1K miles is significant and indicates worn valve guides or (far less likely) rings.

thats not really correct.

Burning .5 to 1 quart of oil in 3k miles is perfectly acceptable for this engine. To say that no oil burning is the only acceptable answer is not realistic.

My belief is that one of the major reasons excessive oil consumption takes place has to do with over-filling. New filters, drain crank case and oil tank. Refill with 8 quarts, warm up engine into normal temp. Oil pressure settling at or below 2 bar on the dash. With the engine continued running, add additional oil 4oz oil at a time untill oil gauge reads between 1/4 &1/2. Correlate guage to dip stick. If dip stick below minimum add until mid dipstick range. Excessive fill burns through intake fouling intake and may be contributing to clogged air injectors. If consumption falls off at lesser fill volume, this is a validation of an overfill.

95 with under 62k miles. It uses approx. 1/4 quart per 3000 miles.

This is how I manage my oil fill except I keep it beteeen 1/3 and bottom of the stick. Engine runs strong and I use a quart every 1600-2000 miles. All seems ok to me.

Factory Porsche actually says (somewhere, I can't recall) that 1 quart of consumption per 800 miles is the maximum acceptable limit. Now whether you can tolerate that kind of consumption is a personal question. And considering the significant cost of a proper top end rebuild (let alone down to p/c yikes!), many are ok with a quart here and there.

As a data point, my 95 at 164k miles uses 1qt every 2500 miles or so; and this was the same consumption I had at around 75k miles, IIRC. To the OP: if you're nowhere new the 1qt/800 miles, just enjoy the car! Very easy to obsess over these gorgeous beasts but frankly, they are far more durable than most of their owners

To give you some perspective. I rebuilt the engine in my 98 at 107k miles. Total rebuild. After broken in, the car consumed a quart every 3500 miles.

I think each engine is a bit unique and as long as your engine runs well, oil consumption is consistently better than 1qt per 1k miles, well then... don't worry, be happy!
