Default Tire Removal and Installation

Hey SoCal guys,

I'm looking to have a set of tires removed from MYO2 Wheels and installed and balanced, on a set of Fikse FM10's.

Can anyone recommend a good and reliable shop in or around the Long Beach, CA area, that can perform this function and not run the risk of effing up my wheels?

I have used Wheel Enhancement before and was very satisfied with their work, but they're out in Culver City...

Thanks in advance for recommendations to a good, reliable shop that might be a little closer to the LB area.

West End in Gardena does great alignments, they did my alignment after the PSS10 last year. Not sure if they can do the tire swap you need, you can call Darin or Chris at West End and see.

Andy,
I know west end alignment well and I'm pretty sure they don't do tires, but thank you for the thought

I would drive some to have work done on wheels of this quality. I've had rims dinged up before by local tire shops, and it is an experience I don't want to repeat.

Call Eli at www.wheeldynamics.com in South El Monte, (626) 443-9100. They have the Corghi Artiglio Master tire mounting machine, an engineering marvel that truly does not touch the face or edge of the rim, as well as the Hunter Road Force wheel balancer, and they know how to use these machines. They will treat you and your Porsche with respect.

Eli has refinished wheels for me, and mounted two sets of tires. All the work has been perfect (I'm a picky SOB...)

While you're there, stop by Manuel's El Tepeyac at 812 N Evergreen Ave, East Los Angeles, and have a Hollenbeck burrito to make it a perfect day.

Any shop with modern tire mounting equipment can do the. Just go to a local shop or dealer and look at their machine if it is a newer one with the nylon parts that come in contact with the rims you are good to go on not damaging the contact radius of the rim to tire interface. Some shops use their least skilled workers to mount tires. You can always supervise and ask questions if the guy mounting tires needs some guidance.

Andy,
It's not a matter of doing the job it's a matter of doing the job without jacking either set of wheels up with nicks dings and scratches.

For liability purposes most shops will not let you supervise.

Here's the message I emailed to WD, since I never rec'd a response.

...I called Wheel Dynamics last Thursday and asked for Eli, but was told he was busy so, I talked to one of the girls about when was the slow day so I could bring in a set of MY02 wheels to have the tires removed and then mounted & balanced on a set of Fikse FM10 wheels, while I waited...
I told the girl, I was referred by Bobby T., of Pelican Parts and that he told me to ask for Eli...
The net result was I never heard back from Wheel Dynamics...
Could someone please advise?

Thank you,
Paul

Call your desired shop, ask them if they have a center-post tire changer. If not, skip.

These machines can be hard to find (they are quite expensive, over 20k new: Corghi Artiglio is one such version). They secure the wheel via the center bore and with a seasoned user no tool touches the wheel's rim. The newest machines I think are actually fully automated and the user just loads and unloads the wheel/tire.

Sometimes the nearest place with one is a large corporation (Mavis, etc.), but presumably a specialist wheel/tire shop would also. A local dealer, if they have a large enough service department, may have one as well.

Dealers these days do wide, large wheels with low-pro tires all day long. A center-post machine would be a no brainer for any shop that does a lot of tire mounting.

If your dealer is small, they may not have one. But an MB, BMW, Audi, VW, GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, etc. dealer may. As for if the user knows what they're doing, I can't say!

Depending on how long these tires have been mounted, and how much lubricant was used to mount them, it is of course possible that tire could tear or get otherwise damaged.

Sorry I can't recommend a place local to you.

Sorry about that Paul, if you wish we can squeeze you in tomorrow or Thur, go on our site and hit the chat button, sometimes when phones are busy we still take chats...

Let me know, or PM your number so I can call you back.

We use the Corghi with the center post but with the adapter that goes into each lug area for the best fit without clamps.....

Thanks,

I use America's tire in Long Beach. I ask to watch. Make sure they use the guard.

They moved, very close to LAX, just a quick hop up the 405, call:
Dave Martin
Wheel Enhancement
(310) 836-8908

This place is awesome. I have had several dealing with them, all positive. They under promise and over deliver, a bit of a cliche, but applicable here.

As Bobby writes, "While you're there, stop by Manuel's El Tepeyac at 812 N Evergreen Ave, East Los Angeles, and have a Hollenbeck burrito to make it a perfect day." I also recommend the Torta de Guacamole burrito, or the Okie Burrito. Manuel is in heaven now...what a character, back in the day...that would be in the 60's. He used to have a bottle of Scotch under the counter for his regulars...El Tepeyac gets lots of mention in Joseph Wambaugh's cop stories about the goings on in the East Los Hollenbeck division of LAPD.

Martin,
I wound up going to Wheel Enhancement and was extremely satisfied; plus as you mentioned, they are closer now!
I called them up they said come on down and took care of me while I waited, with both sets of wheels handled with kid gloves.

How do you spell fantastic customer service? Wheel Enhancement.

P.S. I did finally receive a call from wheel dynamics, 5 days later and after the job was finished by Wheel Enhancement.

Here is the net results.
