It depends. In general, I fully agree with the contention that a car with a 76-78db noise floor at freeway speeds makes a poor listening environment and if I have to crank up the volume to drown out ambient noise the resulting sound level, no matter how distortion free, wears on me and distracts from the awareness of what's around me. OTOH, if one does a lot of driving around town or in slow commute traffic better sound at lower volumes can be appreciated.

I think that's why how and where you use your car is important. When I take the 911 somewhere, it's for enjoyment of the car. The last thing I want is music or other audio masking the sound of engine, exhaust and general automotive ambiance.

I love good audio but paying a lot extra for it in a 911 isn't worth it to me on principle, even though I could afford it.

C&D has the 992.2 S at 74db. The T Is louder at 77db.

per chat
  • Measured sound power: 74 dB is about 50% less than 77 dB.
  • Perceived loudness: 74 dB sounds about 20-25% quieter than 77 dB to most people

That said, I’ve never found the engine note on the 992 to be something impressive.

I was remembering the T SPL when I said 76-78dB. The S is apparently lower than that although a car like mine without the back seat is probably a bit higher than the S. Regardless. compared to our Audi EV or even my GMC Denali pickup, my 911 is a rather poor listening venue. Anyway, I'm familiar with the fact that the dB scale is logarithmic.

It's not a matter of the engine note of the 992.2 being impressive or not. It's that when I'm driving my sportscar for fun, I prefer to hear all of the audible feedback from the car...engine, exhaust, tires, what have you...rather than an audio system.

Surveys say that 93% of wives say their husbands don't listen to them; I'm proud to say I've never heard my wife say that. 😃

I daily mine, and like to blast "Kashmir" on first dates. The Burm helps set the mood.

Which is totally fine - for you, not others. This thread does make me laugh where people are saying how to spend their money on options. I think I can list about 30 options that are more silly (to me!) than Burm.

Burmester - YES - 100%. I've retrofitted to all my GT3 builds as not available in all Porsche's wisdom. I did upgrade both the woofers and the mid ranges in the doors and of course added sound deadening - results are amazing.

True. I don't have FAL or a sunroof = almost Burm $
Was that guy serious about the added sales tax for an option? Is that how we're speccing cars now?

Goes without saying. We're all just giving opinions in response to the question posed at the top of the thread. I tend to agree with you about some of the options. It's all very subjective.

Currently own a 22 4s w Bose, a 23 Turbo S with Burm, and a 26 GTS4 with Bose. The Burmeister is clearly better and louder with better Dynamics, certainly noticeable the question, is it worth the extra expense, and how is it going to compete with the engines soundtrack. In the GTS the Bose is completely adequate, and I think sounds great. It also depends on how you are streaming the music or if you are plugged in directly. Lots of variables but I think the Bose would suffice in most circumstances.

I had a C2 with Bose, and now I have a C2S with Burm.

Put the money into PCCB.
i've had a Bose in my 991.1TT as well as my 992.1 TT. Now I have Burmester in my 992.2 Targa 4S. The Burmeister is much more than 10 to 15% better than the Bose. It's much crisper and the bass is much better.

Always thought Burm was a waste of money, since I'm no audiophile and music in the car is low on my list of priorities...then I had it in my 991.2 Targa. Now the Bose in my 992.2 is a complete letdown every time I turn it on. Bose would be ok if I didn't know how much better it could be with Burm. It's a no-brainer that I would pay up for Burm again in the future.

So the take-home message is: If you don't know what you're missing, then keep it that way.
